Building Anglo-Saxon England

Must read for AS historians
An important book. Blair goes through a massive set of archaeological reports and makes a good case that the shortage of AS buildings found argues they used a style of building that typically place posts in lintels such that all you get is a slight trace (no post holes). There’s other insightful stuff but I found this alone made the book well worth reading

I kept reading bits out to people
I got this for Christmas after having dropped some heavy hint. The first thing to say is that it is quite a heavy book. It sat on my shelf until I could afford to buy the kindle version which I read whilst referring to the figures in the actual book. The book is a great look at the Anglo-Saxon part of Britain, which may be smaller than we think. I won’t give the plot away, you can read that in the introduction. But the sections on the invisibility of Anglo-Saxon buildings and on the place names had me exclaiming out loud and trying to tell anyone who would listen about them. And the lack of homogeneity and cultural influences were also informative.Every now and then a good, well-written book comes out that allows you to update your undergraduate understanding of the subject. This is one of them.

Outstanding work
Fantastic book detailing the latest evidence, and methodologies, on Anglo-Saxon English civilisation. A fascinating recreation of the period from 600AD to 1100AD, well written and presented, and built on a lifetime's scholarship. Highly recommended.

Lighting up early England
This very fine book focuses on the many buildings - from houses to churches and palaces - in England during the period 600 to 1100 and on the practicalities of life and work for those who used or owned them. To reconstruct all this from sparse surviving remains requires a lifetime's work, which Professor Blair's genius is uniquely able to provide. Splendidly produced and lavishly illustrated, available too at an affordable price, the volume situates England brilliantly within the context of countries neighbouring her in the British Isles and continental Europe.Norman Tanner SJ

Fascinating
A fascinating book. Packed full of information and details with many references. A little heavy going at times it proved to be very interesting. Some of the references I was not aware of before so that too has been useful.

Not For The Casual Reader
I had some Amazon vouchers and was searching for a book to buy (it cost me £11.76) and came across this. I gave the book four stars because it is beautifully produced on excellent paper, but it was too scholarly for me. I read up to about 200 pages but found myself not really understanding very much and couldn't understand many of the diagrams. I started to skip through some pages and have now reached chapter 11 out of 12. It looks nice on my shelf though !
