A different perspective that questions our assumptions about this story.
I was attracted to this book by its cover (as intended) but also because I had also been studying the same story recently. The author asks us to set aside what is frequently our western perception of this story and invites us to consider another possible point of view. He does so in several steps:Firstly, he explains the geographical, historical and cultural context to the relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans - prior reading of 2 Kings 16 & 17 is helpful here.Secondly, he considers the significance of the location; a factor that many modern readers would miss.Thirdly, he offers other interpretations of various details in the story which lead to seeing the encounter in a new light. Finally, he argues that what we think we understand "aint necessarily so" and we should be willing to re-examine our own pre-conceptions.Some reviewers have suggested that this author's books have a tendency to be light on content relative to price. I did not find that to be so in this case and I would recommend the book to those who want to see this story in a wider perspective.

Brilliant
Such a refreshing book and so wonderful to have the Jewish culture of that day explained clearly. What a difference it makes to our understanding of Jesus. How good it is to open our box and think differently!
