Four teenagers from the backwater town of Dancer, Texas — Keller (Breckin Meyer, Road Trip), Terrell Lee (Peter Facinelli, Twilight), John (Eddie Mills) and Squirrel (Ethan Embry, Can’t Hardly Wait) — make a vow to leave Dancer upon graduation and move to Los Angeles. When graduation day comes, the folks of Dancer try to convince the four boys that staying home would be the best choice, forcing them to reconsider their vow and appreciate where they’ve lived their whole lives.

Very small town coming of age story with a sense of humor
A slice of life character story set in a very small town. The movie follows four boys who have just finished high school and have a plan to move to Los Angeles. As they consider the implications of this plan, the nature of small town life and the sort of people who choose it are sketched out as a backdrop for the central coming of age decision-making plot. All the characters are distinct, but they have the familiar, ordinary, believable quality that implies the writer understood the subject well, and enough detail and range to make a story like this deeply engaging. The writer also had a sense of humor that matched the setting perfectly, and didn't get in the way of dramatic elements.

Sweet, Sweet Movie
This movie was written by someone, who grasps the value of life, and who presented life in a small town as precious. I grew up in a small town in Mississippi and have, also, lived in Houston, L.A., and Denver, among others. Although I have enjoyed every place I've lived, my small town is the only place that still lives in my heart. Thank you for this lovely movie.

A Great End of High School Starting Life Movie
We have all been at that point in our lives when we one day are no longer kids and become adults. This movie is just about that in 4 boys in a graduating class of 5 finish high school. They all grew up together and have made plans for their futures. This is about that all changing weekend after graduation for the kids, their families and others in town. Similar to American Graffiti so much transpires for these kids. Amazing casting with great performances by the four leads. A feel good family movie and for those of all ages.

One of the Best Movies from the area I grew up in.
I grew up in Alpine not far from Ft. Davis (Dancer) Tx. and i always wanted to leave growing up but never really appreciated living there. This movie always reminds me of what i miss about the area and what i will do some day when i retire. I will get me a Chair and sit on the porch just like the store owner. I will say if you are from a big city, and yes i live in one now, you will never get the meaning of growing up in one. Thank you to the director of this movie and the Art Director because we share the same name.

4 entwined individual stories
kinda nice. this is a VERY small town and in this case engenders a very close friendship among the 4 boys of similar age. each has a very different family situation, which they must navigate. sort of 4 different stories in one film, but all tied together by their friendship. some of the relationships with the other characters are forced, but not to the point of being distracting. worth a watch.

Good small town feel movie
I loved and love this movie. I am the same age as these guys and watched them do movies from the mid 90s up until the 2000s. No drug using or cussing, just a good small town movie of guys wanting to branch out from their small town and experience the other side of life.

Wasn't the best movie I've ever seen but it was a pretty good movie without cussing, except for one damn. I watched the whole movie and thought, hmm...there's something missing. What could it be? Wait I know, they weren't F-ing this and F-ing that, through the whole movie! What a pleasant experience, for a change. Of course it was made in 1989 and that time is long past. Unfortunately Hollywood wants us all to talk like trash now and doesn't want to make movies like this anymore.

Wonderfull little gem
This hard to get movie was a real germ. DIRECTOR AND WRITER Tim McCanlies is a genius, that only have directed a couple of "real" films with deep and long lasting qualities.Tim McCanlies is the brain behind quality films like "Secondhand lions" and "the Iron Giant".Dancer, texas draw lines to the Pixar animated film "Cars", with a similar setting in a very small, forgotten town with a population of 81. 4 young men have decided to leave town after graduation, but that is not so easy at it seems, because in a very small town, people depend on each other. This film was Tim McCanlies first film, and you can tell that this man actually has true emotions in his work.Trust this man for quality, as he will never give in to Hollywood. It is his way - or the highway, and in Hollywood that kind of integrity when it comes to a script is hard to find.I rate admire Tim McCanlies as much as Gary Ross ( director of "Seabiscuit" and "Plesantville" among others) for their love and talent in moviemaking. These guys know, that without a real storyline and deep characters you never reach the point where a movie is more than just 2 hours of entertainment you will never re-visit.Cant wait to see more from this man.I give Dancer, Texas 4 out of five, because the script was not as developed as "Secondhand lions", and there was room for more character development in the story.
