An Island's Eleven: The Story of Sri Lankan Cricket

A brilliant history of Sri Lankan cricket
Now in my 80s, I have been a devoted fan of Sri Lankan cricket for longer than I care to admit—indeed since before they attained Test status. This is the book we have been waiting for.It is beautifully written, well researched, fair and perceptive. Non judgemental but misses nothing in taking us through colonial Ceylon cricket origins to the modern day Test greats and 1996 World Cup winners. From early legends like Derrick de Saram to Aravinda de Silva, the author Nicholas Brookes captures vividly the transformational influence of captain Arjuna Ranatunga and onwards to SL icons as Murali, Jayawardene and Sagakkara. This is as much a history of Sri Lanka itself, so interwoven is cricket in that island’s story. For example, the author graphically tells us of the late 19th century central cricketing influence of Colombo’s anglicised schools, not least S.Thomas, where he taught when researching this book, and Royal, which he describes as “the first seminaries of Britishness”. Stand aside Eton and Harrow who he tells us have only produced 15 England players: S. Thomas and Royal between them by 2018produced over 100 SL Test-cricketers.This is just one of umpteen nuggets in this outstanding book.It deserves to be a strong contender for Cricket Book of the Year. This will be some feat for its able young author who spotted a gap in cricket literature, finding he says so few books on Sri Lankan cricket at Lords library. He has more than filled that gap.

A fascinating and fantastic look into Sri Lankan Cricket
This is going to be seen as one of the great Cricket books in years gone by. A true masterpiece that is incredibly well researched and contains the occasional anecdote that reminds you why cricket is the funniest sport around. A must buy.

Imperfect hard back book
Hi … I bought this book as a present and unfortunately the pages are not cut cleanly as you can see in the photo if you zoom in. This is disappointing as it is for a massive cricket fan and sadly I don’t have enough time before I need to give the book, to return it for refund or replacement.

The scope and range of this story is remarkable; the author has set out to detail the rise of Sri Lankan cricket, and in doing so illuminates the history of this remarkable island itself, doing so in incomparable style. Impeccably researched, and imbued with a flair for prose truly uncommon amongst historians - this is a magnificent accomplishment, and just as importantly an exceptional read.A book guaranteed to inform, surprise and delight in equal measure. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
