Great classic SF
When I was young, I hunted for the books in this series in used books stores all over New England. They were out of print and hard to find. I was happy to see these Kindle compilations, and it was great to revisit these old tales from the Golden Age of SF.

Classic
The Technic Civilization series, especially the Flandry pieces, is a classic in science fiction literature. I first read Anderson and Flandry a lifetime ago. It still reads well, and it still gives one pause. Some literature, especially science fiction but also classic mystery and detective literature, often does not read in later life as one remembers or remembered it. That can be disappointing but taken on its own terms still satisfying. Flandry, however, does not disappoint even a lifetime later.

Flandry is the 31st Century James Bond
The Dominic Flandry series by Poul Anderson is the very best writing in the space opera genre. Dominic Flandry is the 31st Century James Bond, but with a melancholy outlook that adds depth and perspective to this excellent series. Flandry knows that the Terran Empire that he serves is decadent and unlikely to survive many more generations. He decides that it is important to learn how to "enjoy decadence" even while he laments it: "decadence is not merely lolling around on cushions eating drugged custard" he explains. Enjoying real decadence takes work! These are the final two Flandry stories. In "A Stone in Heaven" Flandry is an Admiral of Intelligence, and is investigating a plot by a powerful Terran noble to instigate a military coup. It is an OK story, but not my favorite Flandry novel. "The Game of Empire" is not an especially good story. Here, the main protagonist is Flandry's daughter. For one reason or another this one lacks the zip that most Flandry stories have, and probably only die hard Flandry fans will enjoy it. RJB.
