From Mr Bass Line to Quiet Storm crooner
On his first solo LP Henderson is still figuring out whether he wants to be a jazz rock fusion bass player or a sexy soul crooner. For fans of Henderson the musician (like me) this is a plus as he gives more space for his instrumental compositions and bass chops. That said the title track, an instrumental showcase for Henderson's bass lacks fire, mostly repeating a Larry Graham type refrain with a few effects for variety. The real delights here are the mid-tempo funk grooves such as Make me feel better and You havn't made to the top. Also nice are the stomping instrumental Time featuring histrionic lead guitar, and the salsa lilt of the song Let love enter with its catchy melodic refrain. Treat me like a man is mid tempo ballad in a style close to Marvin Gaye. The remaining three tracks are slow gloupy lurrve ballads, well sung and produced, but just not my bag. Of these the most interesting is Stay with me this summer which has a sparsely arranged, atmospheric back drop giving room for Henderson's subtle bass playing to be heard.

Unsung Master of the Bass
Michael Henderson is one of the most underrated bass players of the 20th century. Listen to this first solo effort and that is all you'll need to see that I have proven my point. It boggles my mind that at one point Stevie Wonder had Michael Henderson, Ray Parker Jr. and Billy Preston as part of his live tour band at the same time.
