The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya -Limited Edition Steelbook [Blu-ray]

A thoughtful and soulful movie.

I've seen a few reviews on the web criticizing this film for its lack of a common narrative structure. I'm a normie, and I only just very recently learned what art house actually is, along with grindhouse and the history of movie making and movie regulation and unregulated movies, and I just wanted to let other movie normies know but you don't have to take off Stars just because of the odd narrative of this film. Just look up the definition of Art House, and it can make a big difference in your ability to enjoy movies that diverge from the norms.

"And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and she was with child..." (Revelation 12:1-2)An astounding achievement, and one of Studio Ghibli's best. You could describe it as the antithesis to the Disney princess story, but that would undersell it. For the first two-thirds of this, it touches on everything from the miracle of childbirth, growing up, tradition and resistance to tradition, longing for another place. Princess Kaguya is presented with a great depth of intelligence and emotional maturity that Disney has rarely plumbed in their own heroines. I wondered where this might be headed, and then the endgame is revealed in the last half hour or so. Suffice it to say, I was not expecting such a poignant reflection on mortality. And then the specifically mentioned date of August 15 prompted me to see if there was any significance to it, and it turns out there is. August 15 is, in the Catholic calendar, the Assumption of Mary. This story was very much rooted in Japanese folk tradition, but it was nice to have that religious/spiritual connection to the West. Who knows, maybe Isao Takahata was Christian? Overall, I thought this was a beautiful story, thematically and visually, and one that will be worth watching again.

This is a must see movie. Everything is carefully executed, especially color rendering. This is water color based, not oil color based. It has lighter, fluffy feeling and is more suited to convey dreamy atmosphere as this movie is based on Japanese literary tale. I like the ending scene in which the princess must go back to the moon. It means death, at the same time rebirth. Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is less well known than Hayao Miyazaki since his work is more for the grownups rather than for kids. His style is also different from Miyazaki’s as his is more like true to life, as shown in Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday. This one is different from his previous works. He tries to show what he is after in seemingly literary fork tale. He leaves the job to you, the job to find true meaning of life.

You need to hold it in your own hands in order to see how beautiful it really is! One of my prized possessions in my collection now!

I love deep and meaningful animated films that use breathtaking visuals to break limitations that live action and CG films have. The music for the film is not just amazing, but it stays with you.

The animation is beautiful and impressive at times. As the animator crowds know it's not easy to have your character play an instrument. Although "Snow White," did it way earlier. The story is also good and the plot goes in directions you'd never have expected. The main character is complex and feels real. She's just not interested in guys...how many films do you even know of that have the woman characters not clamming for a male lead. Really my only issue is the ending which felt wrong somehow. Why does she leave her home? I don't know. Something felt wrong about it. I guess that's not a good explanation you almost have to watch the film to understand.

Fully engrossing, a beautiful story of the struggle between obligation and following own’s own heart.

LE BLU-RAY : On le sait, la HD brille au plus haut quand il s'agit de cinéma d'animation. Pastels, fusains, aquarelles, le trait est livré ici sans filtres. Une sensation merveilleuse d'avoir accrochée dans son salon une toile de maître prenant vie... Au plus proche des matières et couleurs. Merveilleux. Tout simplement.Deux grands maîtres viennent donc de quitter la scène de l'animation japonaise.Après le départ d'Hayao Miyazaki, c'est au tour du cofondateur du regretté Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata, de livrer ici son testament. A l'âge honorable de 80 ans, le réalisateur de Pompoko et du Tombeau des Lucioles, le fait ici avec un sens de l'épure absolument admirable.Retour aux sources de l'animation pour Le Conte de la Princesse Kaguya. Un trésor de la culture japonaise dont les origines remontent au moyen-âge. Un récit à la fois tendre et cruel sur la fragilité de la beauté en ce monde. Corruption du désir et de l'envie sur la magie et la grâce. Un conte universel aux résonances bibliques ou en quittant le "jardin d'Eden" la beauté originelle se consume dans les feux des artifices et du pouvoir. Une profonde mélancolie du propos que vient consoler la clarté de la forme. Le graphisme, ramené à l'essentiel, dessine en quelques traits, touches d'aquarelle et couleurs pastels,des mouvements d'une grâce et d'une fluidité qui évoque la magie des premiers Disney. Une présence de la matière animée où se lisait encore le travail des dessinateurs. On pense même au prodigieux travail de Frédéric Back sur l'Homme qui plantait des Arbres.A cette apparente mais virtuose simplicité de traitement surgissent d'authentiques visions où tout s'envole ou parfois même bascule dans la rage d'un fusain charbonneux. La douce harmonie se déchire et vire alors à l'expressionnisme le plus halluciné. L'exemple le plus saisissant étant la stupéfiante séquence de course éperdue de Kaguya fuyant son temple-tombeau dans la nuit de la forêt. La peinture naïve confine alors à l'abstraction et seule l'émotion gouverne, libérée des limites du figuratif. C'est toute l'histoire de Kaguya. Tentative désespérée et déchirante d'échapper au monde des devoirs et des convenances pour que résonne encore le chant de l'enfance.En cela le Conte de la Princesse Kaguya est l'adieu bouleversant d'un cinéaste atteignant les sommets en revenant à l'essence de son Art.Également sur le blog Les chroniques ciné de Francisco

il faut avouer,graphiquement c'est atypique. On pourrait même juger que c'est négligé comparé à ce que Ghibli est capable de faire. Celà dit, ça lui donne un certain charme, mais là n'est pas le plus important !Je ne vais pas vous raconter le film au risque de vous spoiler, mais ma fille de 4 ans 1/2 au départ était sceptique... je lui ais dit, "regarde, si tu aimes pas c'est pas grave, mais ne juge pas sans avoir regardé... et j'ai lancé le bluray...."bilan ? ma fille a fondu en larmes à la fin en s'identifiant au personnage, et l'a placé direct dans son top de ses dessins animés préférés, avec le royaume des chats, et totoro pour ne citer que le Ghibli.c'est donc un très beau dessin animé, où l'histoire transcende l'esthétique, où l'esthétique contribue à son coté atypique.Il n'y a pas deux films comme lui, et c'est bien ce qui le rend aussi attachant ! Une excellente note donc largement méritée !

ce DVD de conte traditionnel japonais adapté magnifiquement émerveillera petits...et grands! Incroyable de poésie, même la version française est très belle.
