NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind: Watercolor Impressions

Beautiful impressions
The media could not be loaded. Ā Here's the other art book for Nausicaa, the other being The Art of Nausicaa, which is in Japanese and not available to English as it wasn't translated. This one collects all the art created using watercolour for both the manga and film.About half of the book is on the manga. There aren't any comic panels but you'll see a lot of covers, such as those he did for Animage, a Japanese anime and entertainment magazine. The covers are printed huge, often fullpage. Very beautiful and feels very different from the mainstream manga with the use of watercolour. If you remove the dust jacket, you'll see some of the Animage covers that have been published. For the film section, there are storyboards, background concept art and character designs. Since I've the other art book as well, I see a bit of duplication of drawings, but printed in different sizes. There's plenty of accompanying commentary for the art. He talks about everything from his thoughts on drawing covers, which he dislikes, and drawing Nausicaa (character) out of character, which he dislike even more. You'll find a lot of interesting stuff regarding clashes with his artistic vision for the manga and film at that time. At the back is a longer piece of interview which looks at how the idea of making Nausicaa came about. All the drawings that appear in this book are drawn by Miyazaki, dating way back to 1982. It's amazing to see how far Miyazaki has come.Nausicaa and Miyazaki fans will find this book to be a nice collectible.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Great presentation of NausicaƤ sketches prior to the current 'Art of' book coming out.
I bought all the VIZ 'Art of' books for Miyazaki-san's works a few years ago, but NausicaƤ was not among them... yet (it was just released earlier this year, 2019). In its place was this beautiful collection of watercolor impressions which was larger than the other art of books and came out in 2007. It has a lovely white slip cover; within is a collection that largely covers the art for the manga version of NausicaƤ which is very interesting compared to the final anime. It's also heavier stock of paper than the glossier art of books. There's a lot of VIZ NausicaƤ material with this, the manga, the art of, and the picture book.. I've got the Viz manga hardcovers but haven't read them yet. :-) Highly recommended for the Miya-san collector and completist. (j4.)

Love Naushika!
Great artbook, I'm fan of most Miyazaki anime, but Naushika is one of the best, it rests deep in my heart, so, i can constantly recommend it to fans of Naushika. The good side of artbook is totally awesome quality of pages and art itself, but, there is actually bad side, which is .. text. Miyazaki commentaries is like "meh, i was pushed to do this", "actually, i don't like this art", there is even more hillarious commentary like "I don't remember painting this" Well.. what the point in such commenting?Besides of that, artbook has really interesting parts with explanation on world of Naushika itself and difeerent parts of it like towns, character design and lots of more. You can't argue with little Om! :D

Impressions, indeed!
I ordered this more out of curiosity than anything else, expecting a fairly slim volume on a par with the Nausicaa comics: instead, it comes in as a pretty hefty tome, with many of Miyazaki's covers and "thinking out loud on paper" moments. His commentary (mainly captions to each image) is humble and reveals an intriguing glimpse into the mind of one of Japan's most famous and prolific Anime directors. I mean seriously, you'd never read a Pixar or Disney director apologies about "I didn't want to do a magazine cover, but the art director was insistent", or even revealing his intent to use Oni as main characters early in preproduction (yeah, those never made it to the final film).

A rare and interesting look into Miyazaki's Nausicaa
This book is excellent. It combines great concept art, poster art and background info on the Nausicaa movie and manga by Hayao Miyazaki. The attention to detail and research undertaken to create Nausicaa and the world she inhabits is breath taking. The progression of basic ideas (wanting to do a Japanese period drama anime of 'Beauty and the Beast') to final concept (creating 'Nausicaa' as we see her today) was especially interesting to me. This book is a high-quality coffee-table book. The only downside is that many of Miyazaki's comments on his work are especially self-deprecating. Cheer up mate! Highly recommended. 10/10I don't know if the other Art of Nausicaa book found at Amazon is similar or the same. Can anyone help there?

"I don't remember why I drew this." -Hayao Miyazaki
Nausicaa is an interesting character because she's very sad and distant, yet she also realizes her princess duties and as such puts of a facade around her people. This Watercolor book quickly gives you everything you need to know about Nausicaa's wide range of emotions and what makes her such a lovable character.

A beautiful book.It is more based off of the manga than the film, and it's unlike the other Ghibli art books. It doesn't have a break-down of the art, but it's full of lovely watercolor paintings by Miyazaki.

If you like the NausicaƤ manga
If you like the NausicaƤ manga, this is essential reading. If you are after film stills and cel art, get "The Art Of NausicaƤ" ISBN 978-4-19-814560-6 instead (only in Japanese). As the title suggests, this book only contains (beautiful) watercolor art, mostly for the promotional and cover art material related to the manga and concept art for the film.

Great for all Nausicaa fans
I really love Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and this book is perfect for anyone who loves it too. It shows lots of watercolour paintings Hayao Miyazaki has painted and also features his comments on them and what they were used for. Also included are many sketches he drew when designing the film and seeing Nausicaa develop is very interesting. Contains maps, diagrams and sketches for the film too.Super!
