For years, I used to open coconuts with a cleaver. It was dangerous to say the least, and often very messy (meaning, I would spill a lot of the delicious water inside). This combo works great. Not dangerous at all and so far no mess/spillage. The metal edges are sharp enough to cut into the coconut, but not so sharp that you might cut yourself. You have to hit the edges quite hard with the mallet, and it takes some pounding to get through the outer shell, but it's easy and worth it. No more dangerous cleaver.

My husband has been buying Young Coconuts for years. We have tried everything from having them cut open at the store (losing all the coconut water) to taking a meat cleaver to them. This product is very simple and works great. Wish we would have known about it sooner.

For those who aren't comfortable using a cleaver to chop coconuts, this is for you! Follow the directions on how to use it and it works like a charm. Great investment!

I was only able to open 2 coconuts. The top of the hammer came flying off while I was trying to open the 2nd coconut. Poorly made. I'll have to get some really strong super glue to try and fix it.

this is a must have if you love coconuts but are tired of ruining your kitchen knives. I have inept used it on your coconuts and it's amazing. Usually I would have my brothers open the coconuts with a kitchen knives (which was scary) now I open them all by myself. It only takes a few hits for it to open the coconut. I can't believe I went this long without owning one of these.

Rather cheaply made. The mallet is okay quality, but the metal opener began to deform after only a few coconuts. When it works, it is terrific, but it does not hold up very well and degrades quickly to more of a blunt instrument that causes the coconut shell to crack along the sides rather than opening the top. This allow all the liquid to leak out before you can open the top fully and pour the juice into another container. I am not sending it back, but I would not recommend buying this product.
