I love Kate Pugsley's artwork so you know I HAD to order this book for my son! He and I enjoy reading it every night. He's a huge fan of mermaids and we love following Maya on her journey under the sea. The illustrations are stunning (especially the inside of the cover!). I'm thinking of ordering a second copy for myself so the book is in pristine condition! Hoping Kate makes more books!

This book was illustrated by one of my favorites and I couldn’t wait to add it to my daughter’s collection. She loved the book and I highly recommend it! Such a beautiful and happy book to have on the shelf :)

Such a fun and cute book. The story is sweet, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful!

Excellent book

This is a beautifully illustrated story about friendship and imagination. When Maya and her family visit the beach, she is disappointed that rather than spend time playing with her parents, they shoo her off to play with the other kids. Maya being shy, falls asleep on her floaty turtle. While sleeping she has an amazing dream about being a mermaid. She meets another friendly mermaid and off they go on adventures where she sees many other sea creatures. When she wakes up, she notices another girl, who looks just like her mermaid friend. They discover that they have a lot in common and play together.This is a relatively simple story, that is very realistic today. Maya has to use her imagination and dreams because being an only child with busy parents, she is often alone. With the wonderful, colourful illustrations in this book, the listener (in this case my three year old granddaughter) can travel under the sea with mermaid Maya and see many sea creatures as well as discover that it can be easier than you think to make a new friend. My granddaughter loved the illustrations in this book and kept asking me what everything was. I had trouble turning the pages and she kept wanting to go back. I think my older grandchild would have enjoyed the story aspect, for her it was the illustrations. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. This charming book tells the story of Maya, a shy little girl spending a day at the beach with her family. When her family tells her to go play with the other children while they relax, she drifts off into an underwater dream where she discovers that making new friends might just be easier than you think.This could be a good choice for folks trying to build a library that offers representation for all children. Mermaid books are typically pretty whitewashed, but Maya is a beautiful brown girl.This picture book is appropriate for ages 3-7.I received a complimentary copy of this book via a LibraryThing Early Reviewers giveaway. Kate Pugsley's Illustrations in this book are stunning. My youngest (3) was drawn to this story the most. I believe she liked the bright colourful pictures and the simple story about a little girl. My daughter loved guessing what Maya (the little girl in the story) was hearing and seeing, it looked like it was going to be another mermaid when really it was a fish or some other sea creature when you turned the page. My daughter thought that part of the story was hilarious. It was a very simple story with a happy ending of friendship. The sweet and simple tales are some times hard to find so for toddler age I found this book to be quite refreshing.

It’s adorable and sweet

Bought this book for my shy, mermaid-loving kiddo and she LOVED it. The illustrations are bright and beautiful, the story is simple and fun, and I loved that the mermaids were just regular-looking little kids instead of teeny-waisted disney-esque mermaids. We've read in a dozen times in just a couple of days. Hope to see more books by this author/illustrator.

An adorable book with the best illustrations- wouldn’t expect anything less from Kate. This book was here to welcome my son when he came home from the hospital :)
