A Fresh Look at Jazz Guitar Voicings
To save pennies, I purchased the older (2004) edition of this book. In the new 2015 version, I would have to assume that a lot of the typos have been spotted and fixed. I was kind of disappointed that the CD was missing from my book (even though the CD holder was brand-new intact), but not to worry - I can play and I can read so I guess I didn't really need the CD after all ... This is a fairly short book which uses text sparingly, but is big on staff notation and tab. As the book's title states, this is for *advanced players*. It was refreshing to encounter Vic's innovative take on jazz guitar voicings, since so many books in this genre are just rehashes of every other book on the subject. I have played through literally tons of jazz method books and theory books, but I have never before seen anyone voice chords in this manner - so to actually see something new was a welcome surprise! The guitarist who buys this book should be advised that a great number of Vic's voicings here require herculean stretches! I'm six foot tall with fairly large hands and some of them were impossible to play with my span (although I could do them as arpeggios). I highly recommend this book to any jazz guitarist looking for a unique and innovative approach to voicings!Jeff Brentauthor of Modalogy: Scales, Modes & Chords - The Primordial Building Blocks of Music (music theory / Hal Leonard 2011)

Mind (and hand) expanding
I have a couple of Vic Juris CDs and I really like his music. I remembered that almost 10 years ago a guitar teacher showed me a page from this book which gave examples of compound triads (poly-chords) and I found it to be very interesting but way beyond me at that time.I bought this book last year and the intervallic structure chords have been inspiring me to write some very nice music. These chords are similar to chord forms that Allan Holdsworth played and can be harmonically ambiguous as they don't have the usually tertiary structure. The book also covers triads on different string groups, spread triads, and unusual chords using open strings.Highly recommended and inspiring.
