Yes, it certainly can. I have a theology book that is 2" thick and 8" tall. It handles it very well. Best book holder I have. I bought two of them.

I have a few of these and absolutely love them. They are great for sitting in a chair and reading, or at a desk, or on your bed or whatever. Good for actual books and electronic (tablet, Kindle).
