The product is fantastic and the service was even better
I had originally ordered a lower-tech product but the USPS dropped the ball and it still hadn't arrived more than two weeks later. When I contacted the vendor, he was sincerely sorry, so much so that he immediately sent out a free replacement of a higher-grade product.I have always liked Garmin products but this model is just super. I simply cannot say too many good things about the product line or this particular vendor. Thanks, Michael!

Still the Best
My old Garmin died of natural causes and it was time for a new one. I tried two competitors because they were cheaper. What a mistake - you get what you pay for! I have a new-found appreciation for the tried and true. Let's start with the mounting device. The gyro ball remains THE best way to position my GPS and get it exactly the way I want it on my windshield. The screen is now extremely responsive to touch, so no problems there for inputting addresses. I LOVE how the default navigation screen shows my current speed at all times and turns red when I exceed the speed limit, but doesn't come at me with repetitive, annoying audio that I'm speeding. The competitors' units also did not display current speed as a default and I never could figure out how to change it through their very UN-intuitive settings. And Garmin very wisely relocated the on/off button to the back of the unit, so I don't accidentally turn it off every time I grab the unit. The others still have it in the upper left top of the unit - uggh! In addition, Garmin has the power cord plug into the back of the unit - nice! The others have it attach to the left side of the unit so it protrudes into the driver's line of vision. It's obvious these competitor models were initially made for the European market where the driver is on the right side of the car. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. The only suggestion for Garmin that I have is that you need to add some sexy voices like Antonio Banderas. Lol!

More is less
My old Nuvi's maps were out of date, and since we had just moved, I could not find the data cable to update them. Amazon offered me this one at a real discount, so I ordered it. The day before it arrived I stumbled across the old Nuvi data cable and updated the maps on it, but decided to keep the new Drive 61 since it had a larger screen. While the screen is larger, it has less information on it. It is also harder to see. If you don't have the screen tilted directly at you, it becomes so washed out you can't read it. The speed limit and current speed info was moved to the lower left corner (and reduced in size), so that I can't see it without moving my right arm. On my Nuvi I could show the distance-to-destination, time-to-destination, current time, and elevation all at the same time; on the Drive 61 you must choose only one of those, and again, it's much smaller than on the Nuvi. The big screen is dedicated to showing mainly the map, so if you really need to know all the side streets to your left and right for several blocks in either direction, I guess that's good, but for me it's a waste of space. The good thing about the Drive 61 is that the voice commands are much better than on the Nuvi, with more info and better pronunciation. For some reason, the Drive 61 is always off about four houses on street addresses. I haven't tried the Traffic app, and don't intend to. I have other traffic apps, and they usually don't tell me anything useful until long after I've gotten in a traffic jam. My wife likes the better voice commands, so we'll keep using it in her car, and I'll use the old Nuvi in my Corvair.

Love this GPS
I got the Garmin Drive 51 USA LM.After some research I learned the LM stands for lifetime maps. I thought something was wrong with it when I first plugged it into the computer with the included usb cable because I couldn’t get anything to really come up like it should. I then realized it was because the battery was completely drained. I left it for several minutes,( it was still charging because computer was still on) then it all started working like it should. I did an update and then took it off the computer and continued to charge with the same usb cord plugged into an outlet. I then set up ( inside the house ) my settings, which included avoiding tolls and highways ( also there was an exclusion for ferries). I chose to save those settings because I hate interstates. I was then able to find my trip location and save it ( there is a mini sd card slot if you need more room), all from inside the house. I also went ahead and saved my home address. I used the included cigarette plug charger to hook it up inside the car. I took the 3 hour trip. The GPS never failed me. It gave me great directions. This was very easy and correct. It wasn’t overly priced. If you want a good general GPS this one will be great. Very satisfied.
