4 Comedies
I didn't read all 4 comedies...yet...but nearing the 3rd. It is a good, safe bet that literal fundies will hate this. Politicians will learn a few things fr/ it too. This guy was far ahead of his time. Just like Thomas Paine eh. TV & movies virtually copy the story-lines fr/ it word by word. ;(. Goes to show that writers today don't have much imagination eh.

Funny
Segal's translation has great wit. It does a great job at capturing at least some of the wit of Plautus' comedies. He does a great job of translating the Latin. I heartily recommend this translation.

Four Comedies...
a worthwhile read for anyone. but look into it if your taking a college course on roman comedy especially though. it's not a quick read but a good one. the "brothers Menaechmus" stays the truest to roman comedy forn with the five staple characters all in there. not for those wiht short attention spans.

I really enjoyed reading these plays
I really enjoyed reading these plays, particularly the The Swaggering Soldier. As a modern reader, you don't necessarily need to know much about Roman society to find Plautus' characters amusing, or his stories entertaining. That being said, the introduction by the translator is very helpful when trying to understand the cultural and societal context in which these plays were written, as well as some of the overarching themes. The notes at the back are similarly useful, and the translation of the Latin gives a flavour of the wordplay and punning that Plautus was fond of. Worth a read!
