Bad Girls

I have read many of this authors true crime books in the past and enjoyed most of them. However, this one was quite bad. Had the author written the story in about 300 pages it would have worked better. This is for a few reasons. First, it was HIGHLY repetitive. Phelps could have easily given us the details in way less than 500 pages had he not constantly repeated what happened. I am so serious. It was every-single-chapter. The same stuff, over and over again. Whoever edited the book should have noticed this because it was unnecessary and quite frankly, took away from everything. It sort of felt like Phelps was trying to convince US about the guilt or innocence of these two girls and that is NOT how a true crime book works. All the author should be doing is giving us the details in a neutral way. Secondly, Phelps was NOT neutral in this book. It was pretty clear from early on (and even mentions so in the forward) that he doesn't believe that Bobbi Joe was guilty at all. However, the jury CONVICTED her. These are people who are also neutral- those who were given details of the case in order to make their determination. So I didn't like this that much either. Finally, many of Phelps previous book give background information on the victims and perpetrators so we can sort of get to know them. Much of this was conveniently left out expect for the background of Jennifer Jones, which really irritated me.

Could Not Finish This Book About Disreputable People
If you enjoy reading about immoral people with no redeeming qualities who contribute nothing to society then this is the book for you! I have nothing against lesbians but do oppose criminals, drug users, + those whose sole purpose in life is to party while ignoring their children. I could only read about a fourth of this repititious book (although I am a fan of the author + true crime books) before giving up on the characters + their unwholesome activities. To a large extent their lifestyles are probably hereditary + make me have no interest in visiting this area of TX.

This and all of M. William Phelps' books are excellent
I have read most of Phelps' books and found them to be well researched. He has a way of leading you into the murders by introduction to both the victim and murderer[s] backgrounds as far as he can. this insight plays out emotionally with the reader. Then there are the court cases with the respective prosecutor's, defense solicitor's, profiler's, psyche's, professional's and their opinions the witnesses. As far as the adversarial areas i.e. prosecutor and defense attorneys, other professional's credentials etc go, it can be very tedious indeed. I just want to get on with the trial, I don't need to know they are the best this or that...however in making this statement, Phelps is thorough and wants to give recognition to these people. Fair enough. All his books are worth reading and all the victims are worthy remembering and in death to tell their story through the courts, all of the murderer's involved need to be removed from society. If you like true crime and the drama of the court room, read his books any or all, you will note be disappointed.

Another Brilliant Read
I'm coming to the conclusion that Mr Phelps could write about a phone book & still have avid readers glued to each & every page. I love true crime & was absolutely thrilled after discovering & reading my first book of his, that there was a great big stack of his books for me to enjoy reading through. If you, like me, enjoy true crime, then look no further as I believe he stacks up with the 'Best of the best' alongside the likes of the late & undisputed queen of true crime Ann Rule.

Shocking
This book caught my attention when I noticed it was about 2 girls from my hometown. Seems like I would remember when this hit the news but I don't however my children do and are close in age to them. I was shocked at what went on in the so called party house. I have no clue how the mother of the one girl went to the house and joined in , I would have been calling the police. I'm just shocked by the whole story and really saddened too , a lot of people hurt by all that happened. I didn't like the way the book skip back and forth , made it hard to keep up at times but over all think he did a great job telling the story.

Not one of his best
Ive read most of Phelps' books and usually appreciate his command of the English language and his ability to create a clear, well-connected narrative. This book does neither. I finished the book because I wanted to give the author a chance to redeem himself, but that never happened. It's almost as if he wrote this book in two or three days without bothering to read through it himself. If I hadn't read Phelps before this, I would be highly skeptical about the author's ability to deliver a well-rounded study of a situation. This book is an anomaly for this author.

Sorting through the lies.
The author obviously and admittedly is on the side of Bobbi. The book would have been easier to follow if he had stayed to a chronological format that tracked the story from beginning to end. I feel too much time was spent on Jen's lies and those of her mother and half sister. The implication is that the MWPD did a bad job of investigating and perhaps they did. But in the end, both girls were there during the murder of Bob Dow and they are both guilty no matter what their stories are.

Life without structure.
A very in depth documentation about the lives and deplorable circumstances the girls were raised into. M. William Phelps writes graphically and places you into the surroundings as it happens.
