Q: Is this authentic north face?

Yes. The inside tag says North Face, and an additional holographic tag behind that shows another North Face logo with a QR code that when scanned takes you to the North Face website.

Q: How does it work with pony tail?

There is no hole in the back to allow your ponytail to escape, so it’s trapped under the hat. That being said, it has an adjustable strap in the back that allows you to loosen the hat to accommodate a ponytail being worn, but finding it comfortable is subjective.

Q: What will happen if i wash the hat in the washing machine and air dry?

According to the inside of the hat is says HAND WASH ONLY, and that stretching it or getting it wet can reduce its sun protection ability, probably because stretching the hat (which can happen in the wash) can reduce the sun protection of this hat as it opens the weave. You’re better off hand washing it in the sink with mild detergent, and then draping it over a Kleenex box to allow it to dry. I usually wad up plastic bags and fill in the the inside of the hat to maintain its shape before setting on a Kleenex box so the neck cape doesn’t get crumpled/wrinkled.

Q: Does this hat include chemicals to block UV light? I want a hat without added chemicals

While I can’t say this with 100% guarantee, I don’t think they add any chemicals to this hat to aid in sun protection - the protection comes from the weave in the fabric and the inability for light to pass through it. It does say on its interior tags that sun protection can be diminished with use, when stretched or when wet (all these things affect the weave, and the weave is where sun protection comes from in hats/clothing). It is HAND WASH ONLY. The sun protection it provides is fantastic (we have not washed it yet), and are happy with our purchase.
