Heartland Food Products Pancake Mix, Sweet Cream Buttermilk, 5 Pound

The consistency & smell of these pancakes is outstanding. They are light, fluffy and just what you are used to getting at your favorite diner or cafe. Thats the good news. Unfortunately they leave something to be desired. They dont taste bad by any means...they just dont have that extra flavor kick that you seem to get at your favorite diner. I wouldnt call them bland but IMO you need to add some of your own items to make them better. I suggest a teaspoon of vanilla for every cup of mix. Maybe some brown sugar. Perhaps a little malt? You can also try using milk instead of water which would also help a little.So, not a bad product but you have to take into consideration the cost as well. They arent cheap and while they are a complete mix you still have to weigh out the value. Im going to try another batch but this time Im adding some vanilla. That might make them a 4/5 star product but out of the box with no modifications I can only give 3 stars.BTW - as for making smaller batches of them - I used roughly a 1:1 ratio of mix to liquid and it worked out fine. Always start with a little less liquid aince its easy to add. So, Every 1 cup of mix is combined with about 3/4 cup of liquid to start. Adjust from there.

This pancake mix is very good with a nice hint of sweet cream. It is a large bad that only provides directions for large batch - for businesses of really large families. However, we only have 3 in our family so we cut it down to smaller servings. Just measure as you would for any other pancake mix.This is also Great for waffles (which is what we mainly use it for). After having the best sweet cream waffles while visiting a Old german Mill / Restaurant in San Antonio Texas on vacation, I HAD to have more for home. They have a nice gift shop that sold small packages of their mix but the cost was too steep for me. So I found this mix on Amazon hoping it would be similar. It is.It does not have directions to use as a waffle mix so I just use the same amount with an egg (it already contains dried egg in the mix) as you would with a regular waffle mix. Just google waffle mix directions.I like that is comes in such a large amount so it lasts a long time and the price is worth it. Yummm.I recommend for those who like a touch of sweet cream.It should be a little sweeter in my opinion for sweet cream waffles so I just add some powdered sugar to the mix as well.

I got a waffle iron for christmas and wanted to give it a try without having to go through all the trouble of making waffle batter from scratch. Poked around a bit and found this mix. I love buttermilk pancakes and waffles so I decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. I didn't have tremendously high hopes to begin with - I mean, how good can a "just add water' pancake mix be? - but this greatly exceeded them. In fact, this is by far the best simple pancake mix I've ever tried; all you need to do is add water and bingo, light and fluffy pancakes which are great with butter and grade-A maple syrup and even better with wild Maine blueberries or mini chocolate chips thrown in.The package comes with two sets of instructions, one for a large (meaning ginormous) batch, if you're going to make the whole bag at once, or one for a "small" batch which would probably be enough for 3 or 4 people. Being just one person I did a little converting - which took a minute, because the instructions are by weight and not by measure - but it came out to 1.5 cups of mix to 1 cup of water making about 6 decent-sized pancakes or 4-5 large waffles. One may think twice about paying $24 for a bag of pancake mix but it's totally worth it for the quality.

We're on a constant quest for how to make the best pancakes, either home made or from a mix. Until now, our favorite mix has been Hungry Jack Buttermilk with a half-water, half-milk liquid. Sometimes we throw in a teaspoon of brown sugar or a plash of French Vanilla creamer to get that diner sweetness. Okay, so that's my advice if you don't want to order pancake mix over the internet (but what a great story to tell!)If ordering pancake mix over the internet sounds perfectly reasonable to you, then this is the stuff for you! Just using straight water, the pancakes are very good. It took a little trial and error to get the stove flame and amount of liquid just right... too hot, or too moist and they come out a bit pasty in the middle, but now that we've got it down pretty well, we're really enjoying this brand and are so glad we found it.Enjoy!J____________I'm sort of addicted to pancakes and this is by far the closest we've found to the taste we get from Black Bear Diner's sweet cream pancaks! it's OK...but WAY to much product for a family of 2. I put 1 cup of the mix in quart zipper bags (which I keep in the freezer), but wow, that was a messy day at my house! Also, this huge bag only gives directions for mixing up the entire bag in one batch, or splitting it in two...but, frankly, I don't even like enough people to invite for THAT breakfast. All together, my husband and I will be eating waffles until we die, and still might have to leave the rest of the baggies in our will. Taste good, though. If you are having a pancake breakfast for the Elks, you can't go wrong to start here.

Our family absolutely loves Heartland's waffle and pancake products. My personal favorite pancake mix is their sweet cream buttermilk, and we've never tried any of their waffle flavors that we haven't just loved. Every Sunday morning the Grandkids gather early for Grandpa's waffles or pancakes. It has become a tradition at our house and Heartland makes it easy and fun. Recently a good friend and neighbor of ours underwent a bone marrow implant and while he was recuperating, he called one day to say he was hungry for Grandpa's waffles. Grandpa gathered up his mix, utensils and waffle iron and headed for our neighbors house. Afterwards, our friend called again to say those were the best waffles he had ever eaten, would we please share our secret with him on how to make them. My husband replied "just go on-line and buy Heartland, it's as easy as that and you can't go wrong.Marti Owens
