Use a small hook to go into one of the holes in the grate and pull up.

Yes I have it almost 2 years and it holds up good

Q: Does this drain just insert into a typical 3 piece round shower drain?

It’s for a mud tile pan ( old school ) You’ll need the base piece with a clamping ring and the pan liner. 300 to 500 lbs of sand mix for the pan floor and curb
