John Kay & Steppenwolf - Live in Louisville

John Kay's Voice Still Has His Gravelly Growl!, They Hold Up Better Than A Lot Of Other Rock Bands From The 60s/70s
John Kay and the timeless Steppenwolf still rock! I came of age through the late 60 and early 70's and Steppenwolf was playing the soundtrack of my life. Born To Be Wild (in Mono!) was the first album I ever bought! When I saw this DVD I worries I might not want to see the band of my youth in a geriatric rocker video and destroy my youthful picture of them. I obviously didn't listen to that thought and I am pleased beyond my expectations.John Kay and line up for this concert rock it out much better than I would dare expect after the decades. And John Kay's voice is still just as gravelly and growling as ever and he even still looks great. So many others have failing voices or change keys/arrangements to allow for the wear time has brought. Keeping the sound I remember makes this video stand out.One thing others have noted and I missed at first is the missing bass player. While there may be some recorded tracks for bass it's hard to imagine how they could be integrated so well. I don't know how it was done but it sounds good.I enjoyed the extras. Seeing how Steppenwolf and John Kay appreciate and interact with their long time and newer fans at WolfFest showed nicely a band that appreciates their fans as much as the fans appreciate them. The band member profiles are another set of extras I enjoyed and found the background they provided made me appreciate this DVD. The John Kay & Friends sampler was interesting.I had some worries that this DVD would shatter my youthful picture of Steppenwolf. They played an important role for me when I was coming of age and were a major influence when I was playing in a local rock band. To say this video exceeded my expectations is an understatement. I enjoyed the show and the extras too. Thank you John Kay and Steppenwolf - I think you have held up amazingly well! I must be pretty obvious this is a 5 star video for me and I would expect for most Steppenwolf fans.

Worth buying! Dolby 5.1 DOES WORK - here's how
Great concert and good sound. John sounds good. Others have mentioned no bass player - they are correct. Apparently they have some sophisticated software that lets them coordinate pre-recorded bass and I also noticed some extra percussion (cow bell and wood block). Don't worry though, the rest is pure live - no lip syncing crap. When you watch one of the extras on this thing, at their "wolf-fest", they have a 5th band member playing bass. They made the unfortunate mistake of not having a selection for "AUDIO SETUP" like most DVD concerts, but you can still get Dolby 5.1. Here's how - You have to hit your "Display" or "Setup" selection on your remote that would be available on all things you play. On my Toshiba DVD player, once the DVD is inserted, I can hit "Play", then I hit my "Display" button that shows all the settings on a bar across the top of the screen. One of the items is an icon that looks like music notes. When I use my arrow button to select it, it pops down all possible choices, on this particular DVD it lists Dolby Stereo or Dolby 5.1. I select Dolby 5.1 and it instantaneously changes. I then hit my Display button 2 more times to make the menu bar disappear. I've found on other DVDs, there may be more choices.

Very good live performance. Group sounds as good as ever.
Steppenwolf fans will definitely like this music video of a live concert filmed in Louisville in 2004. John Kay and the group sound as good as ever and all the popular songs that you are familiar with are here (e.g., Rock Me Baby, Magic Carpet Ride, Born to be Wild, and The Pusher). It's a worthwhile addition and there are interviews with all members of the group as well. This is not a Blu-ray edition but standard video. It looks good but it isn't enhanced. The sound is recorded in standard stereo, though your home theater amp may be able to play it back in other sound modes. Had the video and audio been enhanced or recorded in a better format, then this would be a "5."

Absolutely Powerful!
His message of corrupt government and deep state. One of the early truthers with some of the best rock ever.

If you like the wolf, buy it
Poor video quality. Audio is stereo , not 5.1. However, the sound is strong and clear!

Class Act
Wow.....John Kay is a class act. He's mellowed with time but hasn't lost a step as a rock and roller. I loved the interviews with John and his band mates....they have allot of respect for him, and as one of them mentioned, it's not the John Kay show with a back up band.....they are a true band and they're all make up Steppenwolf. I enjoyed all the extras (watch that Last Wolf Fest sampler......wow, this is a band who loves and respects their fans as much as their listeners love them......very cool). Most aging rockers embarrass themselves 30 years later.......Kay and company deliver the goods here, and the Steppenwolf songs have surprisingly stood the test of time well. Kay has no ego and is a gentle, thinking man.....a great package of music, and the extras help us really understand these guys. A really terrific package.
