Overlord: Galactic Kings, Book 1

How the heck is this book so damn popular?
Maybe it’s changed since last I looked but every time I’ve looked at this books reviews since I started reading it (over a week ago!) it only seems to have 4/5 star reviews. Why ?Why does everyone seem to like something I’ve come to loathe ? That I don’t know but I’ll try to explain what is dislike so much about this book. Now it’s a given Ms.Hackett is a talented writer. She’s gotten awards for it . She has a loyal and eager fan base from it ( well deserved) and she’s a really kind and decent person from what I’ve seen.None of that matters here per se but still. We all have hits and misses and for me this was a huge miss.I gotta say I was turned off at the get go w/Mac .The moment we meet her she’s first irresponsible ( staying out too late with friends drinking the night before a huge day at work) then she’s showboating like she’s the snarky lead in an action movie. She’s rushing in to get coffee at the company coffee shop when some idiot tries to threaten her with a knife. With an attitude that was so reminiscent of someone like Ryan Reynolds,I had a hard seeing anyone but him in the scene. She punches the guy in the gut, gets his knife tells him what a mistake this all is and why,as she then proceeds to knock him into a display of snacks. Calls the security over and then tell the guy behind the counter how she’d been pissed if she’d spilled her coffee during all of her dramatics. Coz, Ms. Macho couldn’t possibly have set down her coffee while she was showing off by flipping his knife around and knocking the into the display. All I could do is roll my eyes at the cocky showboating . So over the top . So unneeded and killed and and all thoughts of connection with this wanna be Marvel star .She’s supposed a pilot not an Avenger. 🙄Then once on the planet she seems to prove every chance she gets that “fools really do rush in where angels would fear to tread”. ( paraphrased I know ,but O so true!)Every chance this girl gets she’s rushing head long into danger without stoping to think for a single second. She finds out the planets magnetic fields are changing her ,giving her powers and abilities. Does she has tons of questions about this ? Practice them ? Research what’s happening to her ? O heck no! That would be too much like common sense. This girl will have none of that . She goes from almost killing herself trying escape Rhain, who has nothing but bothersome and annoying at first but other wise kind ,all things considered. To almost getting herself killed trying to help or defend Rhain. She’s ALWAYS just running hell bent with her swords not stopping to think. Just kill, kill ,kill. Now granted in the way of these stories that’s basically how it goes.Couple meets. They’re attracted but try to fight the attraction ( barely at times ) . Then they are attacked. They get a break. Have sex or just flirt and heavy petting on the verge of sex. Fight, fight, fight. Then a break to heal, sleep, and finally sex if they haven’t already. Then let the fighting begin again . Rinse and repeat til story ends. The End.It’s not _always_ a bad formula, sometimes it flows so well you forget you’ve been here before but other times it feels like what it is .Here I definitely felt it. Mac feels like a one trick pony ,err dog,all she sees is “rescuing Poppy”, occasionally she has a “ squirrel!” moment where Rhain is the squirrel and he distracts her with sex. But otherwise ALL she seems see is rescuing Poppy. Now sure, sure her friend does need to be rescued but not the insanely fixated way Mac does it . See transport with Poppy on it . Focus solely on Poppy and nearly get killed by insane zombie like creatures because all you see is Poppy. Then stupidly drag your man and his ppl into an unknown cave after her and almost get yourself and all of them killed because you couldn’t stop 🛑 and think and I don’t know maybe plan first. Nope, not you . You gotta rush in like the clueless TSTL wannabe you are. And at 68% ,I couldn’t take it anymore. She had no plans or expectations other finding Poppy and sexing Rhain. Vapid cocky wanna action star, wasn’t for me.

I really enjoyed this alien romance
Mallory is a pilot for a space program. She flies a test run using a worm hole to try to get to a Jupiter but things go wrong and she finds she has crash landed on a planet on the other side of the galaxy. Her scientist is missing and she is now captive to the alien king. She has to get away to find her friend and try to figure out a way to get home.I enjoyed the story. It wasn’t too science fictiony, which I enjoyed. I really enjoyed Mallory and the side characters. Rhain was intense and yet such a good leader. There were times where I wish we got more, like the new abilities Mallory is getting and the whole priestess and the viewing of the future. But overall, I liked the story.

Light and easy read with sword play
Mal from earth crash lands on Rhains planet and helps the warlord fight the bad men while looking for her friend who was in the ship with her. Mal is good with a sword and Rhain falls for her the end. There was know real drama and I feel like it was to easy I also feel the other stories in this series might have the same plot.

Strong lead with lots of action
Enjoyed the story and page turning action. I liked that there was no Insta love and the romance evolved through the story. The first steamy scene is about half way through so its not the focus of the story. There are several steamy scenes in the latter half. The main character is likeable and her strength and fighting skills made me enjoy the character. The Overload is also likeable with a sense of honor and duty to protect his people. The fight scenes and action was well written and I liked the story.

Awesome, great story, characters
Reviewed by Beth and not by Elree.IF you're on the fence or wanting to branch out of your comfort zone, then THIS is the book/series for you.Once again Anna Hackett did an OUTSTANDING job with her story. From sentence one to the last chapter, last sentence I was/am hooked.Love the main characters! Love how Anna wrote, created a strong leading female to go along with a strong leading male. Now next one in a few minutes (have to take a potty break).

Overlord
Never thought I would like Si-Fi. This is the best series I have read so far! Love it! Fast paced, full of action and wonderfully imaginative. Loved it so much I read myself blind. Couldn't put the book down. Now reading Captain of the Guard then on to the Conqueror, I fully expect the last two to be just as fantastic as the 1st.

Exciting adventure-romance between a pilot from Earth and planet Zholto's sexy Overlord...
While his duties as warrior Overlord of planet Zholto keep him more than a little busy, Rhaine is driven to nullify and make up for the sadistic, evil, and manipulative ¡ devastation wreaked upon his people and his own mother by a man he refuses to acknowledge as his father. When pilot Mallory West does her best after her flight testing intergalactic coordinates fails, and instead, she and scientist and friend Poppy are pulled into a wormhole that spits them out to crash on Rhaine's planet. According to a Zholtan priestess who is known for her visions, Mal is exactly where she is meant to be, and with Rhaine, will combine her newly forming energy powers with his to defeat Krastin, who is not only the sadistic warlord causing destruction, kidnapping Rhaine's people, but is the very assassin sent by his father to murder Rhaine's mother.Exciting, since Mal gives as good as she gets, and is a female warrior skilled with swords and other blades as well as hand to hand combat due to her martial arts background. Rhaine immediately recognizes his match in her, yet is further stunned to witness her ever increasing gain in power from Zholto's energy field, which not only surpasses his, but complements and can bolster his energies. Yep. Fated. Really good plotline, and some sizzling heat between the sheets. Five stars aren't nearly enough!

Personally? A disappointment.
I've been a fan of Anna Hackett for a long time, but this book just reconfirms something I've noticed about the last she's released. Her writing style has really started to decrease. It's not the characters, it's the sentence structure and the fleshing out of the plot. Sometimes it's like I'm reading the cliffnotes version of the book and I find myself skimming through pages until I skid to a halt stopped by the eighteenth 'Suddenly' in the chapter. (I have a serious phobia of that word now!)Unpopular opinion, but her last few books have seemed like money grabs to me, aimed at an audience that has only recently discovered her writing and only care about the sex scenes. I have legitimately tried to read this book about six times and each time I can barely get half way through, and I'm so d@mn disappointed about that because I seriously love her as an author. When I first discovered her Hell Squad series I brought every one and had a massive binge read.I won't be buying any more of her books, I'll just stick to the ones I already have. One star.

What a Fabulous start to this new series - a spin off from the Galactic warriors seriesI
Well I can heartily state that Anna Hackett never disappoints. In her new series we meet Mallory, Mal for short, leading a two- woman space mission. In essence testing out a new space ship which for some reason is thrown off its trajectory, through some wormhole a d Then crash lan!d's on an unknown planet. To make matters worse part of the ship has broken off taking Mal's friend and scientist Dr Poppy Ellison with it. Mal is in an inhospitable environment. It just gets worst when she is confronted by these awful hexids. Our protagonist, Rhain who, though very impressed with her fighting skills, thinks she is a spy sent by his evil father!! How Mal and Rhain 's relationship develops and the story unfolds I will leave to you to reaf... But I was up until 3:30 in the morning!! Thrilling read with a new kind of enemy and Mal is caught right in the middle of it!! A fabulous start to this series!! Highly recommend!!

Amazing book!
Thoroughly enjoyed the book! Brilliant writing! Thank you Anna!Absolutely great storyline! I love the characters! Their strengths, loyalty, love. All the action!Totally one of my favourite books. The story flowed wonderfully, and didn't have that long-winded nonsense of them questioning each others feelings for more than half of the book. Will definitely read the next book and more books written by Anna

Loved it!
A spinoff from her galactic gladiators series but you certainly don't need to read it first to enjoy this one (but it's a great series!). Strong kick ass heroine, loveable alpha hero who's a marshmallow underneath it all. Plenty of action and steamy scenes. Love how all the brothers have a different set of powers on their own planets, really looking forward to book 2!

New series, more magic
New series and its another example of perfection. Overlord is the start of Anna's New series and what a start. Mal is a strong, independent woman who cannot catch a break from the universe and Rahin is the overlordness who needs to remember he's a man as well as the leader of his planet. Loved the story, loved all the new characters and the hints of more as well as the new creatures Anna has created. Bring on book 2....and 3 and 4....etc
