Replacement for Troy Bill TB6044XP trimmer
I used these as a direct replacement for my Troy Bilt TB6044XP string trimmer after the starter assembly broke. I replaced the assembly and noticed the existing pawls were wobbly and the little foot was sheared off both of them. In a perfect world I would like to have found metal pawl replacements but wasn’t able to do so easily without changing out the oil pan. I figured the original plastic pawls lasted 6+ years so hopefully the replacements will last a few years at least. Was able to install these and get my trimmer running again in less than an hour. Will be buying another pair to have on hand in as it will inevitably happen again.

Perfect fit for my 2015 Craftsman 4-Cycle Weed Eater
My craftsman weed eater had been experiencing issues with the stater recoil mechanism for the past month. At first I just loosened the screws holding the coiler onto the rear of the engine. This last week it just wouldn’t recoil the starting cable any longer. After reading several articles online and watching a few youtube videos, I thought I would be stuck either spending $35 to by a new coiler (by the way that wouldn’t work no matter how much the guy on YouTube said it would) or buy a new weed eater all together. On the Sears Parts site (yeah it really still exists) I was able to locate the schematic and found that these “stater pawls” could be purchased separately. $6 on Sears with a $9.99 shipping cost...really?!? With this information i was able to find them here on Amazon for half the price with tax and shipping. Great deal. They arrived in two days shipped in a simple bubble wrap envelope. Sears what going to take over a week unless I paid an extra $6 for 5 days. My grass doesn’t have time to wait for that.Installation was a breeze. 15 minutes used between reading the very detailed instructions (kudos to MTD). I did have the advantage of expertise removing the rear housing and that the housing was already off. My estimation is about 45 minutes beginning to end if starting from scratch. The only issue I had is with the detailed instructions. As you can see in the picture, the pieces are black versus the off-white ones in the weed eater. Being black in color on a black starter fan, in a black and white instruction set, made it difficult to use the images.Other than that, a great fit. Hopefully this will add another 5 years of operation to this week eater.

The little knob that was wore out.
The little knob that goes into the slot was wore down. That was only on one of them. I took a finishing nail drilled a small pilot hole the pounded the nail where the knob was. Then I snipped the access off. And it works great. Better than new.

Perfect for Craftsman Weedwacker model 316.731700
These worked perfectly for a Craftsman Weedwacker model 316.731700. Remove the top cover (3 screws), remove the pull cord assembly (2 screws). A bit tight to get the retainer clip on, but be patient and use a needle nose plier.Symptoms were that the pull cord would pull and rewind with no resistance because it was not engaging the flywheel. Look at the photo with the red & blue arrows and see the "foot" on the old PAWL (black) was broken off. It was relly small like the point of a ballpoint pen. These PAWLs are much more robust the feet are heavier. Simply install and put the cover back on. Started up without a problem.

if you have the 4 stroke that has the metal prawls,
this is for the older pull starts until troy bilt wised up and got metal ones. the metal one on mine just keep breaking the springs now. so i was able to use the springs and keeper that came with this kit. side not you can still use the drill start if the pull start comes disconnected

Does not work on TroyBilt Weedeater
It is not a flaw with the product, but when I search my model this is the only option that comes up and says it will work. My weedeater has metal pawls so I should have suspected....but you believ everything on the internet....right?

I could not find return springs by themselves. Pawl ...
I could not find return springs by themselves. Pawl kit was for a different weed eater but return springs worked perfectly on Troy built TB 685 EC. I fixed my starter pawl issue! Don't use electric starter or drill starter. It is what broke the return springs in the first place(or use it all the time). but is is inconvenient to get the electric starter every time you take a break......you would have to carry it around with you.
