The depth of Hugh's knowledge is immeasurable.
Great book, but its bigger than a bible and the print is very small. I bought a whole page magnifier so that I could read it,

How U.S. politics influenced early independence of Cuba from Spain
A most thorough examination of Cuba's history. Sometimes the details were dificult to follow and not really necessary to understand the Cuban "psychology"

More Than Cigars
On par with the late William Manchester as a master of making seemingly dry yet important details totally readable, Hugh Thomas provides the reader with a thorough, digestible narration of the fast moving kaleidoscope of Cuban cultural and political history. As always, his Reference section is a gold mine; he also notes what is missing: No biography exists of either Machado, or Jose Marti, two significant players. As Cuba is currently still in a state of dynamic flux, one can only hope Dr. Thomas produces an update - perhaps loose-leaf notebook style! Peter O. Whitmer

Best History In My Book
Excellent. Complete. Well-documented. It's a complicated history of colonialism, capitalism, socialism and a true social experiment. This helped me see many perspectives in a well-written, never boring, almost conversational way. It's satisfying and enjoyable.

The Essential Cuba
Hugh Thomas's enormous history/biography of Cuba stands out above all others. It is the classic textbook, but readable, fascinating, and very very very long.

Comprehensive book on the history of Cuba - One for the bookshelf!
This book is huge, it's too big in fact. I only got it because I'm fascinated in Cuba & wanted a long comprehensive historical analysis of the country, but I haven't finished it & probably never will lol. But I have the read the chapters which interest me. It's one of the books that you put on your bookshelf & you read a chapter every now & again. It's not a book you read in one go, certainly not. So if you want one of those then buy a shorter book about Cuba (300 to 500 pages) not this one which is 1000 pages plus or so

This is a great book, and very detailed
This is a great book, and very detailed. As i am not even half way through on my kindle, i can't give a detailed review. However, what i have read so far is excellent. If you are a history buff and love Cuba, i would highly recommend.

Brilliant historic introduction to Cuba
Have never really understood Cuban history apart from my memories of years ago in the Western press. My knowledge has now been corrected and I am keen to find out more. I enjoyed the introduction where he compares history to current affairs and it is only really when an item becomes history (with archives opened up etc) that you truly have a real understanding of what happened. Very readable with tremendous detail. Loved it. For anyone like me who has a serious interest in Cuban history and how the British then Americans became involved followed of course by the Eastern block including Russia I can recommend this.
