The Rolling Stones: Some Girls - Live in Texas '78 [Blu-ray]

Possibly the single greatest rock 'n' roll show I've ever seen
Watching this performance from the Rolling Stones' 1978 tour in support of the "Some Girls" album, it's hard to believe that you're seeing and hearing the same band which, just a couple of years earlier, appeared to be teetering on the brink of collapse. But some of punk's youthful vigor had rubbed off on the old Stones machine and, with both the record and the tour, they managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat (at least for the time being). There's a *lot* of material from "Some Girls"--maybe too much--but it's played with tons of energy, and you can tell that the band is having fun. All the hit singles ('Miss You', 'Beast of Burden', 'Shattered') are here, as well as a gleefully furious version of 'When the Whip Comes Down', to which Jagger (whose heart really seems to be in the song) adds an extra verse. Most of the '60s standards had been retired by this point, but the set retains a marvelous rendition of Robert Johnson's slow blues 'Love in Vain' as well as two Chuck Berry numbers (including 'Sweet Little Sixteen', which the Stones hadn't played since 1963). After a refreshingly spartan 'Brown Sugar', the eighty-minute show ends with a breakneck, almost metallic 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'; the Fort Worth audience is ecstatic, and rightly so since it has just witnessed rock 'n' roll in its purest form. The DVD also includes the band's scrappy performance, later that same year, on "Saturday Night Live" (Jagger has a sore throat), and you get a CD of the entire Fort Worth concert. An absolute must for Stones fans, of course, but the casual observer will enjoy this release, too.

4:3 Ratio.... It's 2021 and time to rank/digitize all 4:3 Movies/Videos!
Pretty cool show, they play well and do some good songs, of course I always love when someone covers a Temptations tune! But it's time these older videos start getting ranked up to HD or at least full screen! Some say digitizing, some say ranking, either way it's basically the same idea.... there are no more 4:3 TVs and it's time to spend a little time making these older videos up to date! If you are going to repackage them and sell them, AGAIN, then put the time in to make it worthwhile! It's a great show and it sounds good, but I kept wanting to just turn it off because of the 4:3 ratio! Nothing worse than watching 4:3 on a HD screen! Total Bummer!

Three Stars Only Because Stones Are Greatest Rock 'n' Rollers Ever.
So, I saw a clip of this vid on YouTube, Beast of Burden and it was awesome. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the show. There are a dozen better Stones live videos. Buy this if you already are tired of those ones.Pros: It's the Rolling Stones! Song selection.Cons: Sound mix left Keef's guitar very low and distant. This left the interplay between Keef and Ronnie lackluster to non-hearable. Plus, Mick plays guitar on many songs and his volume is far Louder than Keef. Another problem I had was the weird camera angles and misplaced closeups. Ronnie's soling, so why an extreme closeup of Bill Wyman's face. That happened a lot with different combinations of players. The songs feel rushed, sloppy and Mick many times just spits out the words while barely holding true to the orinal melody/phrasing. Lastly, the overall sound is just okay. If I didn't get it for eight bucks I'd be far more bummed.

Great album - Great concert
Love "Some Girls", my favorite Stones album, and it's nice to have a live concert focused on this album. I have many Stones concerts on video, but several of these songs I've never seen performed in concert. They included some songs from Exile, too, which wasn't a very old album at the time.So that's also a treat. And as an added bonus, this packaging came with an audio CD of the concert, too. Awesome! My only complaint is that despite the video being on Blu-ray, the video quality isn't great. Looks like very little, if any, remastering of the original video was done.

Look and Sound Tired
I remember my high school English teacher telling me that the stones were the worst rock ‘n’ roll band ever. I certainly disagree with that but he must have seen this concert? They look tired, Mick Jagger it’s just kind of spewing and shouting the lyrics. Keith Richards must’ve been having a problem with his amplifier the volume is really low so Ron Wood is playing most all of the solos, and he’s as sloppy as sloppy can be. I still think any hardcore stones fan should own this. I much prefer the Still Life concert.

The Rolling Stones in Texas
The touring band featured the usual suspects--Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Ron Wood. Assisting them--the redoubtable Ian Stewart, Ian McLagan, and Doug Kershaw. The tour was in support of their new album, "Some Girls." It featured many songs from the album, but also featured other songs from earlier. And, boy, do the Stones look young! The concert depicted here begins with "Let It Rock" and ends with "Jumpin' Jack Flash," with many songs in between. A few words about some of the songs: "Let It Rock." Good old-fashioned rock and roll, good guitar work by Richards and Wood. "All Down the Line": A little rough, but good rock and roll. "Honky Tonk Women": As raunchy as ever. Well done. "Star Star": The words would offend many, but the band seems to enjoy playing this. The reference to Steve McQueen always brings a smile! The rhythm section is rock solid, with Wyman and Watts doing well."When the Whip Comes Down": Mick Jagger plays a bit of guitar here, but it is Wood's and Richards' riffing that makes the song. "Miss You": An energetic version. "Imagination": I think that this old Temptations' song represents one of their better covers of the work of others. There is a wistful tone to the song and the band plays well. "Shattered": I like to think of this song in juxtaposition with "Hot Stuff." "Shattered" is a cool tune! Then, the classic blues song, "Love in Vain." Played well as blues. "Jumpin' Jack Flash": One of the best rock riffs starts this off. The band plays energetically and Jagger swaggers through the song.A fine concert album!

Bought this for the great renditions of Beast of Burden and Miss You, found the rest to be excellent as well.
I always loved the version of Beast of Burden on display here (it is on youtube in various places, but, as far as I can tell with footage from only one 16mm camera) this has the best sound and the views from different cameras well-mixed.I watched the rest and I was very pleased to see how the stones were at the top of their game here.Although I generally prefer Mick Taylor's guitar sound as more lyrical and melodical I find that Ronnie is often underrated and portrayed as a garage rocker. This DVD does his playing justice (as does his 1976 Wild Horses solo of Knebworth).Having listened to this delightful concert over the past couple of days I have started preferring it over the other Stones live versions, and that says a lot because I love Get Yer Ya Ya's Out and the 1972 and 1973 concerts. My all-time favorite renditions collection would contain many of the ones on this DVD with some added 1973 versions like Gimme Shelter, Heartbreaker and Angie.

Considering Some Girls is my favourite Stones album I find this strange and disappointing
I was expecting so much more from this one. Can't quite explain what it is but it just didn't do it for me. Considering Some Girls is my favourite Stones album I find this strange and disappointing.
