Awesome Underdog Story
I had no clue who Simon Pegg was until I found this movie and have been a fan of his ever since. I actually got the movie because I am a Thandie Newton fan and had never seen her in a comedy. Mind you, her role is not comedic at all, but this story is so cute and all of the characters do a great job. I also discovered Dylan Moran (I hope I got the name right - he's Thandie's cousin in the movie). SO FUNNY!The movie is about Pegg who stood up his girlfriend (Newton) at their wedding while she was pregnant with his baby. The story then fast forwards to 5 or 6 years later when they've moved on and made their arrangements to co-parent, etc... Newton has a "perfect in every way" boyfriend (played by Hank Azaria) who is getting serious with her, and Pegg wants to win her back by running in the London Marathon (because the boyfriend runs marathons). The story is funny, clean and has a great ending. It lags just a tad in the middle for me (because I am not a fan of sports at ALL (except basketball) and the whole running thing was a bit taxing), but not so much that I would turn it off. I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Charming, relaxed, funny.
This is a movie you watch on a less than perfect day, when your brain is fried from too much work/school, and you need something to cheer you up.Its story is predictable yet charming and its characters are diverse and often times hilarious. You can't help but feel there were some missed opportunities, such as exploring the other characters more in depth, but in the end this movie hits just the right spot.In the end, this film is clearly not Simon's best but I don't believe it's necessarily supposed to be. This is a simple, sweet, funny movie and it doesn't need to be anything more than that.

Best. Movie. Ever. Simon Pegg in short shorts! 😍
Hilarious movie with the usually Simon Pegg humor with a heart warming story line. It’s one of my go tos and actually inspired me to run the marathon. Oh and you get to see Simon in real short shorts and it’s great

Can you really run to get the love of your life back?
To me, this movie is so underated. It did not win any awards, which was the right thing, But, this movie was awesome! It really captures the hearts of those who have given up opportunites because they thought they were not good enough instead of taking a chance.Simon Pegg plays the main character. He is so believable as the "idiot". Thandie Newton play the girl he left at the alter 5 years before. Although she has feelings for him, she does movie on. She starts dating Hank Azira, who is everything she wished Simon would be. He even runs marathons for charity. On a whim, Simon says he will do it also to get back the respect of the woman he loves. My only question, the weeks to train for a full marathon? That is just crazy!

Feel good comedy Simon Pegg style
I'm a big Simon Pegg and David Schwimmer (Ross from friends directs this movie) fan, so have that in mind if you read this review. This is great fun, it is a heart warming movie that even though it falls within a lot of the rom com cliches will give you a great time watching it. Seeing Hank Azaria as a bad guy is great, his character in this movie is not as caricaturesque as some other antagonist he's portrayed before so you don't get as much "free laughs" from it. Simon Pegg's performance is just what we would expect from him and those who enjoy his movies will definitely will enjoy this one as well!

Not one of the better Simon Pegg films
I purchased this as a Father's Day present, as the recipient in question is a fan of Simon Pegg films. Sadly the feedback was not great, the film is not especially funny and hasn't been watched again, despite the good price for a Blu Ray. If you are a fan of Simon Pegg, I would not recommend adding this one to your watchlist, and perhaps go with his later films instead, as this one lacks the same level of humour which is more established in films such as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.If you found this review useful, please mark it as helpful.

Great fun - a lot better than I expected
This film had been sitting in my 'to watch' DVD pile for a while. After viewing the dire 'Four Christmases' (see separate review) a few nights previously, I was dubious about sitting through another 'comedy', but with nothing else to do at 1am on New Years Day (!), I decided to stick it on. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be much better than I initially expected. The basic premise is that Pegg is a well-meaning loser, who five years previously (literally) ran away from his wedding to his pregnant fiancé (Thandie Newton). Now, she's hooked up with oh-too-perfect Hank Azaria. Learning that Azaria is to run an upcoming marathon, Pegg insists that he too will run the marathon, in a bid to woo Newton back. This film seems to have had a lot of criticisms in that it is not like Pegg's previous modern classic, 'Shaun of the Dead', and its (underrated) follow-up 'Hot Fuzz', which in turn were natural successors to TV's wonderful 'Spaced'. Well, I won't pretend for a moment that 'Fat Boy...' is anywhere on the same level of those wonderful, reference-laden offerings. BUT - it doesn't pretend to be. This is a totally different kind of story, a slightly gentler, character-based tale. Besides, wouldn't it be boring if Pegg did exactly the same kind of film all the time?!The cast generally do well. I couldn't really warm to Newton's character, but there was enough else going on for this not to matter too much. Azaria (in case you can't place him, amongst various film roles, he does a lot of 'Simpsons' voices) isn't really in one of his best roles, but gets the job done. Although I liked 'Black Books', I've never really been a fan of Dylan Moran (who appeared with Pegg in 'Shaun of the Dead'), I generally find him too shouty; but here I actually found him quite amusing, and would say this is one of his better roles. But the highlight of the main cast, for me, is Harish Patel, as Pegg's landlord-come-trainer. Patel is great fun, and lights up every scene he appears in.The direction is handled ably by David Schwimmer (who Pegg starred alongside in 2006's 'Big Nothing', which I would recommend if you like your comedy very black and with a lot twists). Only at a few points in the middle do things start to sag slightly, but thankfully they soon pick themselves up again. About fifty minutes in, the story does turn into more of a comedy-drama (which is why some may be against this film), but things still proceed along nicely. There are few real surprises in the plot, but even so, I did find the climatic scenes pleasing. There are also a number of cameos to look out for, including David Walliams (as a very similar character to his Mr. Mann persona in 'Little Britain'), and Ricky Gervais' associate Stephen Merchant, to name but two. But an unexpected highlight for me was to spot children's TV legend Floella Benjamin as Newton's mother. She only has a couple of lines and appears only briefly, but I wish they had utilised her more! The comedy is generally more straightforward than say, 'Shaun...', but there are still some good moments. However, I did feel that it couldn't always decide on the type of comedy it was going for - prime example being Moran piercing a truly massive blister on Pegg'' foot, causing it to squirt everywhere (leading to several off-colour remarks). Fairly amusing, but I found this sort of humour to be out of kilter with the film's general tone.Although not a solid classic - maybe it would have fared better as a TV movie - I still really enjoyed this film, and give it a decent four stars. Pegg and Nick Frost are returning in the forthcoming 'The World's End' - but in the meantime, don't limit yourself, give some of Pegg's different kinds of comedy, such as this, a try.

Run, Fat Boy, Run
After the delight of 'Hot Fuzz' I was expecting great things from this film, but sadly I was left slightly disappointed. There are a few funny moments (mostly the bits that were put in the trailer!) and Dylan Moran is as great as ever, but this film failed to live up to expectation. I found it rather lack lustre, with it failing to gain any real momentum. But as far as an innocuous Sunday afternoon comedy goes you can't really go wrong. Just don't expect many, if any, belly laughs.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
