Solved the problem.
One of the original push rod ball joints broke; with that the top would not go up by itself. They are a little tricky to install but we got them and the top now goes up and down like new.

Wore out in less than 2x months
Ordered these as replacement to the OEM. One broke/snapped almost immediately. Ordered two more, adjusted the arms (mid December). It's now mid February and they are completely worn out. No tension to keep the ball sockets/caps on the top ball. They pop off every time I open or close the top.

I installed this in exactly the same manner as the original, opened and closed the top and it broke. I am not sure it is totally the fault of this part, but I do think that the plastic is a lower density than the original Porsche ones.
