I also LOVED that Harriet had different characters describe the crime scene throughout the book, from a fox to the crime scene photographer. It was a really cool detail that gave us more and more information about the scene, which helped you try to piece it together.I did guess most of the ending so it did lose a star for that. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend if you need a quick and gripping thriller! If you've read this, what did you think?#itendsatmidnight #harriettyce #psychologicalthriller #suspense #fourstarread #bookreviews #bookrecommendations #mrslaurenoliverreads #mrslaurenoliverreviews

Not great
I was looking forward to reading this as Iโd enjoyed the first novel and even liked the less popular second novel, but this just fell flat for me. It seemed very odd for a woman in her late 30s/early 40s to behave in the way Sylvia did. She seemed to drink a lot and just blurt things out which she then felt guilty about immediately, I felt as a barrister she would have had much better language and oral skills and have been smarter with the way she conversed with people. I struggled to believe Sylvia was actually not in her early 20s.The plot itself was a bit silly, I donโt usually guess whatโs going to happen in novels, but within a couple of chapters I realised what the twist would be, so it must have been hidden pretty badly, this of course meant the twist wasnโt even a bend in the road and rather than a gasp I just sighed. All in all Iโm a bit sad, I wanted Harriet Tyce to become a go to author for me but after this last book Iโll approach the next one with much more caution. I canโt recommend this and feel your time and money would be better spent elsewhere.

A New Year no one can forget
A good thriller that kept me hooked right to the end. Secrets and lies unravel leading up to the big reveal at Hogmanay. The perfect read to start 2023 on!

Compelling
My third Harriet Tyce novel (Blood Orange being one of my all time best reads) and she doesnโt disappoint. As with all her work she spins a complex web with characters you just know you canโt trust. I love the way this book just builds and builds with tension, an absolute page turner. This is very well written and I love the use of words this author uses. I find her writing style unique and compelling. Bang on the money again Ms Tyce

Despite its flaws I enjoyed it
The book is written in the present tense, which seem fashionable these days, and the timeline zigzags back and forth, another popular device. I wish we could go back to writing in the past tense, and starting at the beginning and finishing at the end.Despite being a drunk with poor judgment and questionable morals, Sylvie has established herself as a criminal barrister. She is good enough to appear for the defence in the appeal court on a serious charge of rape and win, and she aspires to be a judge. Her best friend of 20 years, Tess, is somebody she knew at school and the two of them have a sinister secret about evidence they gave in a trial for murder when they were at school. I thought the plot was rather thin and I found it slow. There's a sub plot but it's a red herring and it didn't add much to the main story. By about half way you know there are three time zones and so it's obvious what's going to happen. As usual I didn't guess the twist. By the end I was skim reading so I didn't grasp what really happened in 1990, which means that either it was obvious why Sylvie was lying or it's totally baffling. Can I be a total prude and ask why nobody has sex any more still less makes love? Does it always just have to be f***?
