Sewing Pattern - 1809 Daywear Gown Pattern (Size Small 6-10) (See PI460L and PI460M for smaller sizes). Typical gown of the Empire, Federalist or Regency era, made famous by Josephine and the daring ladies of the French court. This version features detachable lower sleeves. For daywear should be worn with a fichu. A Regency style corset enhances the columnar shape required to wear this very Grecian form of gown. Sizes sm (6,8,10), med (12,14,16), lg (18,20,22).

A Good Basic Pattern
If you're a living history buff, this is a pattern you'll want for your collection. Its simple design and two multi-sized options make it very easy to alter and personalize for either day or formal wear. When I needed a gown for a Jane Austen event, this pattern became the basis of a high-necked, collared gown that opened at the side and featured three deep tucks in the skirt. A medium-skilled stitcher should be able to produce either of the dresses as illustrated. The instructions are clear, and the illustrations--though amateurish--are both plentiful and detailed enough to be helpful. The negative here (as usual in historical patterns) is in the size chart, which is why I can't give this pattern a full 5 stars. I had to take several inches out of the bodice back to reduce my chart size to my actual size. You'll want to make a mock up bodice first to be on the safe side.
