The Humongous Book of Geometry Problems (Humongous Books)

Used this book for tutoring a student in geometry this summer
I used this book in conjunction with the Jurgenson and Brown Geometry textbook this summer to tutor a student who needed to pass an entrance exam in geometry so that he could take Algebra II next semester. He passed with a 95.I'm a math teacher and tutor, and own the entire Humongous series. I've also been a professional indexer, and I can tell you that I appreciated the care taken with the index (and also the large font used - a nice treat, in comparison with the usual tiny-print indexes!).There *is* a chapter on logic and proofs, but it's not extensive. However, proofs don't seem to have the emphasis they had back when I studied geometry in the 60's, so it shouldn't be a problem for the modern student. It's odd that Amazon doesn't provide a view of the table of contents for this book.I found a website that does provide one - go here:[...]I definitely recommend this book for those wishing to learn geometry. It even begins with refresher material on the algebra and rational numbers you'll use in geometry.

A good Reference Book
I've had this book a little over a month now. It has taught me a lot as far as the concept of Geometry. It has proofs that makes you understand how geometry is to be looked at, and how to approach a geometry problem if you came across one. But, after reading about a little less than half the book, I must say that this book is not meant to be studied from as a primary source of "teaching your self geometry". It is really a good reference book. Yes it does go indepth on the teachings the fundamentals of solving a geometry figure. And I must say that it does it thoroughly, even at nausea. But, if you're trying to get some practice, which what really counts when taking tests like the GMAT, you need a Book of Problems to solve on your own recognisent to really get you acclimated to all these concepts you may need to be ready for what ever test you're taking.Good book, but it is really best used as a secondary tool if you don't understand how to do a certain problem.

Every problem worked out in detail, with extra explanation if you get stuck
I picked this up for my 15-year-old, who’s working through high-school geometry. It ended up covering pretty much everything they covered in his curriculum, so the breadth was perfect. Every problem in the book is worked out in detail which you might see as a positive or a negative - on the one hand, if the student gets stuck, they can view each step. On the other hand, there are far fewer actual exercises than you might expect given the page count. Still, every topic is covered thoughtfully and completely. For what it’s worth, he got an A in the class : )

You`ll go from novice to expert in Geometry !
The Humongous Book of Geometry Problems by W. Mchael Kelley is exactlywhat it says on the cover :Geometry Problems solved with detailed steps leaving nothing to guesses.Be warned : One thousand solved geometry problems step by step in full details . Twenty-two chapters, 575 pages, with the first 3 chapters devoted to Algebra problems necessary to prepare you for resolving Geometry problems in the rest of the book.Warning : W.M.Kelley asks you to solve these problems and only refer to the solutions when you get stuck . Here are his own words :" There is no denying it. If you could figure this class out JUST BY READING the textbook or taking good notes in class, everybody would pass with flying colors. Unfortunately, the HARSH TRUTH is that you have to BUCKLE DOWN and WORK PROBLEMS OUT until your fingers are numb. "Great text but not for lazy learners. Contrary to his custom in his guides, W.M. Kelley proffers no jokes in the text, just pure geometry .

Just ok - not enough repetition of concepts
I have bought many math workbooks over the years, and this one has some definite benefits and drawbacks. It was purchased for two students, one entering 8th grade and one entering 9th grade. Both were going into the same advanced geometry class in HS, so this was intended to prepare them for the class with an introduction to geometry.Pros: has great step-by-step solutions for the problems covers a lot of topics under the geometry umbrella uses proofs in a step-by-step way that helps proofs "make sense"Cons: There is not much repetition - it is more like taking the example problems from each section of a textbook and putting them all in a row, so it is not ideal for the repetition a student would need to really master a new concept; I had to print off worksheets from the internet to provide enough practice on some concepts Solutions and answers are provided immediately after the problem, so with kids who are less likely to really try to figure out what they did wrong, they often said, "Oh, I see..." and went on instead of figuring out what they didn't understandOverall, I thought this was a very informative book, and a great review for mom, who hasn't done much with Geometry since graduating from HS, but it was not great for students who need a lot of practice on any given concept to really understand it. Having said that, they are now both 4 months into the geometry class at school, and have gone back to notes we took as we worked through the workbook to clarify topics they haven't understood at school, but they remember touching on over the summer. So, I guess it did some good. :)

Great book "written for people who don't speak math"
We have all of this author's math books. They are conversational in tone and our 13 yo loves them! If you thought you couldn't do higher math, or if you came away from school "hating it" you will be surprised how easy W. Michael Kelly makes it to understand.

Perfect Geometry Step by Step Guide
As a math tutor, there are times when textbooks don't help. Geometry isn't that hard as long as you are good at Algebra. However, whenever you look at the textbook examples, it easier than the homework problems. I wanted a handbook on Geometry as a good review and have a good idea how to teach my students more effectively. I wanted something with step-by-step solutions, since my method in teaching math is "breaking it down". This book was perfect! It has 40 examples per chapter. And lot of PROOFS to practice! I recommend to everyone who is struggling in Geometry.
