Lunatick Astronomy: The Astronomical Interests of the Lunar Society
B**N
18th Century History to the Stars and Back
The title is very clever and it juxtaposes the very intelligent interior. As I suspected from Mr. Lound's Titanic book he very much an academic researcher, yet extremely readable. The Lunar Society was a great group of intelligentsia living in Birmingham and adjoining areas in the 18th century. A society that included Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Joseph Priestley, Erasmus Darwin et al. a group of people I thought I knew a lot about thanks to Jenny Uglow's book 'The Lunar Men'; but I was wrong, there is so much in here that has not been touched upon anywhere else and wonderfully there are countless notes! The author has turned what I though would be a dry subject to one of excitement and wonder. A must read.
