Lonely Planet Dutch Phrasebook & Dictionary

This is a the best guide I found. The pullout section with commonly used phrases was a great feature. It turned out, though, that most Dutch people we met were very fluent in English so we ended up not needing it that much.

LIke other phrasebooks and dictionaries, this one contains them as well, but provides some very nice benefits for the traveler. In the dictionary section, there are both Dutch-English and English-Dutch dictionaries. There is the usual help with phrases, organized by categories: social, basic, food, travel, etc. In the front of the book are some explanations about Dutch grammar, which is helpful for a bit of in depth overview of the language. The phrases appear in English, then in Dutch, and finally in a phonetic fashion that you can read for a reasonable approximation of Dutch that should work in a pinch. English is very commonly known in Netherlands, so I'm not worrying too much about the phrasebook, but it's a nice gesture to at least be able to speak some phrases in the host language, such as good morning, please, thank you, pardon, and so forth. The book is small and will easily fit into a pocket for handy use. Recommended.

Het boek is leuk. I think that is accurate to say. Ik spreek geen Nederlands. I have not used the book very much yet, but it's a swell design. The binding is sturdy. There are color-coded sections. The print/font are great. I haven't run across any translations or pronunciations that seem wrong to me. My only critique is that a few of the "Survival Phrases" and "Key Phrases" are repeated on the handy pull-out note card. Otherwise, it's a 5-star item.

I love these Lonely Planet Books.The assistance with pronunciation is unbeatable.I speak Afrikaans fluently so learning Dutch isn't too much of a stretch — and this book really helps with the nuances by showing you exactly how to say a word or sentence — far more valuable than any other method I've used to learn a language.Thanks Lonely Planet — my Dutch is improving and my confidence is way up.
