Moab 2: Good, Bad & Ugly
Updated after 100 miles of hiking with shoe...I'm a long-time Merrell Moab wearer and SoCal hike leader. Wish I had better things to say about my new Moab 2s.The good: more prominent arch than the original Moabs, similar fit otherwise, still good lateral support mid-shoe forward, nearly identical tread design, and great price. The bad: they have changed the lacing geometry, eliminated one set of lace holes, and intentionally or unintentionally increased the size of the shoe opening. As a result, I cannot get the shoe to close up around my foot, even trying different lacing patterns. The shoe remains loose, even when tightly laced, and mid-shoe back lateral stability is greatly reduced compared with the original Moabs. The ugly: Two things. First, I am getting a persistent pinch near top of the laces. Started on the right shoe, but now it is on both shoes. Different lacings, multiple tongue adjustments, lots of break-in, and the pinch is still there. Will go away if I relax the lacing, but then the shoes no longer have enough stability for safe hiking. Believe this problem results from the altered lacing geometry and/or inadequate foam padding in the shoe tongue. Second, the terry-cloth liner surrounding the shoe opening began to blister on both shoes after less than 100 miles and, suffice it to say, this is not getting better with added time and use.Overall, as a long-time Merrell customer, I am not happy with either the Moab 2s or Merrell. I ordered a replacement pair of original Moabs, since I am weeks away from heading to the Sierras for the summer and don't have time to begin exploring a new long-term shoe. But I will when I get back.Debating sending the folks at Merrell a note, but frankly, not feeling good about a company that would let a product like this go to market. In any case, I would strongly recommend against using these shoes for hiking, based on my experience with them.

Learned something about "Wide" sizing!
I'm a first-time Merrell customer, and wear a 10.5 (sometimes 10.5W) men's shoe. Seeing several comments online that Merrill's run true to size, I first tried both a 10.5 and a 10.5W Moab 2 Vent Hiking Shoe. While the 10.5W fit better, in both cases my toes were pressed against the front. So I went up to an 11, and my toes were still touching the front, not as much but still uncomfortable. Then I called Merrill customer service, expressing disbelief that I should need to go up a full size to 11.5. I was told to try an 11W, because the "W" adds space "all the way around the foot, not just in width." I never knew this! Indeed, my 11Ws fit well with appropriate room for my toes. Bottom line: as a men's 10.5-borderline-Wide shoe wearer, the Merrell Moab 11W was right for me... so 1/2 size up. I wear athletic socks with them. After I break them in, I'll update this review and adjust stars if appropriate. (And yes, I know, I would have saved time finding a local store to try them on first before ordering on-line.)

Versatile, comfortable, durable
I wanted to wait until I'd used these for a while before rating them. I've had them 6 months now. I've used them as walking shoes and light hiking shoes. I've walked/hiked several hundred miles on dirt/grass hiking trails and asphalt. Very little wear, so expect the soles will last for at least a couple of years. I got the non-water proof version - they are cool for summer wear. Treated them with Nikwax. They are now water resistant, but still breathable. Some reviewers noted problems with achilles tendonitis with these shoes. I'm prone to that, but have had no trouble with these shoes. They have impressive grip - better on wet rock and exposed roots than my $250 hiking boots.

My second pair
I like this shoe so much when I wore out the soles of the first pair after 2 years of wearing them every day I bought another pair. The shoes come in a wide width which is important to me. I walk on asphalt about 15 miles a week and work on vehicles in an oily dirty environment. They have taken the abuse. And I’m not easy on shoes. Just recently the tread finally wore out but they are still in great shape be it a little dirty and one shoestring finally broke. I wear them in the summer and winter. A good sock is important.

Well made shoe at a great price!
I have worn Merrell products for many years. My only complaint over time has been that the soles separated after a couple years. No problem - smear the inside of the the separated sole with Shoe Goo, wrap with heavy rubber bands, put some heavy weight on them for 24hrs to “cure” and they’ll be good for several more years until the tread starts wearing down. The many Merrell shoes and sandals I have purchased over the years have always been comfortable and true to size and shape. The pair of Moab 2 vent hikers that I bought during Amazon Prime Days were even less expensive than the exact same shoe on the Merrell website where they were on sale for 25% off!

WIDE SIZE IS A PLUS
Have been a loyal Keen brand buyer due to the wide toe box but that manufacturer has not kept up to their fan club and quality so I've been looking for a new brand and having purchased Merrell in the past decided to try their Wide size shoe having only worn boots in the past. Fits perfectly and has that wider box i need and hope during the upcoming hiking season they will be a favorite. I went up a half size from 9.5 to 10 to avoid toe jam on the down hill side of things.

A Very Comfortable Summer Hiking Shoe
My son told my husband how happy he was with the his Merrill Moab Sport shoes. They both wear the same size (12 W). So my husband went to a shoe store and ended up with a pair of Moab 2 Vents. He loves his too. He wore them almost every day while on vacation. He is hard to please when it comes to shoes. I bought him a 2nd pair for Father's Day so he can have a spare pair. alternate shoes. He has the Walnut color. And, I ended up buying a pair for myself -- women's size 11M. They're great! I have a high instep. My foot has plenty of room in the toebix for a good pair of hiking shoes. I bought the Smoke color which also has a blue color accent color in it.

Too small.
Looks good but doesn’t fit right. I bought half a size bigger and still a little small for me. Can’t be bothered to return it, I’m going to give it to someone and buy another shoes but not Merrel.
