Brilliant Book!
This covers an area I'm researching and is so well written. Most of these are written by professors who can't write their way out of a bag. NOMADS is clear and informative. I gobbled it up!

Beautifully written.
Very hard to find this calibre of written English in a historical book. The author has a Creative writing background so it explains a lot. A narrative style and full of information. Almost poetic at times. I would have appreciated more pictures and maps, but we do have the internet to do a quick search. Money well spent in relation to the knowledge gained, two thumbs up.👍👍

a fascinating read
Opened a window on a very important part of the human journey which has largely remained hidden and certainly puts much of ancient history and much else into context. Highly recommended for those who like a well researched and written window on the ancient world.

Digressive. Hybrid object, not fiction, no solid non-fiction, written in a style you like... or not
As indicated in the book's subtitle, the author aims at rehabilitating the role of nomads in the genesis and development of some of the major sedentary cultures. And all this over a period of 12,000 years - which is to say that the book barely scratches the surface of the subject. Perhaps it's more of a long mood piece than a desire to inform. It is no solidly grounded academic essay anyway, but a quite subjective selection of cultural and historical moments, characters and sources that tend to systematically support the author's point of view. It is interspersed with references to literary authors and references to Mr Sattin's personal trips among Iranian nomads. While Mr Sattin's writing style seems to have won over some reviewers (see book cover), I found it interesting at first, but then got bored at the digressions and attempts at effects. And if I'm reading non-fiction I like the yield. But here, I didn't learn enough from each page. The contributions made by nomads in a dynamic relationship with the sedentary population, are now better recognized and studied. Those who are interested in what the Jochids (Mongols), who were nomads, brought to the world, I recommand the excellent (while accessible!) "The Horde; How The Mongols Changes The World" , by Pr Marie Favereau (Havard University Press, 2021)
