Calmed my angry shingles scar in a few days.
There are SO many types of Manuka honey out there and I just did not know where to start. When I had MRSA, I read that Manuka honey could help heal it and I bought YS Eco Bee Farms Raw Manuka Honey Paste and used it. I didn't know anything about UMF ratings or any of that. The honey DID work though. I have just a little white mark where the horrible infection was.And it was delicious. Now I have shingles. I am almost 5 weeks into them and the rash should be gone but certain clusters seem to have scarred. One cluster was an angry red, raised, awful looking thing between my eyes of all places. I started to search for Manuka honey to help. I read a lot and learned a lot but couldn't afford the very best. I chose this Pacific Resources International brand because it wasn't wildly expensive at about $29.00 and it says it has a UMF rating of 10+. 10 is the lowest that is supposed to be beneficial but I question that since even regular raw honey has antibacterial properties. The honey comes in a brown plastic jar. It has an expiration date of 2022. I read that the shelf life of Manuka honey was something like 1000 years but this has a short shelf life, not that I am going to have it around for all that time. The honey is a medium deep color and a bit gritty. I like the taste of of YS Eco Bee Farms more but I bought this primarily for topical use. I have been using it on the awful looking shingles scar and it has turned from red to a light pink in about five days. I also have ingested this honey in my tea or just alone and it is good. A bit sweet but honey is sweet. It doesn't have a pungent odor at all and it settles my stomach. It's too soon to tell how much healing this honey will do on the shingles scar but I am encouraged. I will also use it on any other open sores or cuts instead of the usual creams and ointments because it has been proven to work better and is completely natural.I am going with 4 stars for now. I would like to try a higher UMF brand at some point but right now, I am satisfied with how fast it calmed my scar and lightened it. I hope it continues to heal it because it is in such a conspicuous spot..I will update in about a month as to how things are going and whether I have decided to try another brand. I will continue to purchase YS Eco Bee Farms for the taste on biscuits and in my tea. I just like it better. But that has no UMF rating on the label so I will continue with this one topically for now.

A delicious food and a powerful nutraceutical
Manuka honey has gotten a lot of press due to Dr. Oz talking about it on his TV show and posting videos on YouTube. Honey is known as the only food that does not spoil. It was discovered by archaeologists in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs and when tested in labs was found to still be edible after thousands of years. It can be stored at any temperature and does not ferment in extreme heat. It is a good preservative because it has antimicrobial properties and, as such, is regarded as a natural antibiotic. The home remedy of hot tea with lemon and honey for colds and coughs is not just an "old wives' tale." Lemon is a natural expectorant, as is hot liquid, and honey soothes and heals inflamed tissues. It is well known as extremely useful for wound treatment, as well. What is special about Manuka honey is that it is harvested from bees that gather nectar from the Manuka bush, a shrub which grows in New Zealand. Even more than regular honey, Manuka honey is a powerful anti-bacterial treatment for ulcerated wounds, burns, gingivitis, acne, eczema, antibiotic-resistant infections, and hard-to-treat wounds such as those associated with deep vein thrombosis. Some studies have indicated it has anti-cancer properties as well.I had heard about this type of honey from multiple health-information sources which I consider reliable, and I decided to try it out for myself. I wanted to have it on hand as a natural remedy for colds, flu, and skin care--for which I have already used regular honey with good success.I also wanted to keep this particular honey in my pantry as a fire-wall against potential MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection, which antibiotics frequently cannot heal. According to the CDC, "MRSA skin infections can occur anywhere. However, some settings have factors that make it easier for MRSA to be transmitted. These factors, referred to as the 5 C's, are as follows: Crowding, frequent skin-to-skin Contact, Compromised skin (i.e., cuts or abrasions), Contaminated items and surfaces, and lack of Cleanliness. Locations where the 5 C's are common include schools, dormitories, military barracks, households, correctional facilities, and daycare centers." Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that manuka honey is effective against over 250 strains of bacteria, but particularly MRSA, MSSA (methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci).Manuka honey has an extra ingredient that other types of honey do not have which has additional antimicrobial abilities. It has been dubbed the "Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)" because scientists have not yet isolated exactly what it is. Batches of manuka honey vary in how much UMF they have, so each batch is tested, ranked and priced according to how much it has. The more it has, the darker and thicker the honey--and the more expensive. A rating of UMF 10 or higher is recommended for medicinal use. This particular brand has earned a rating of 10+.In addition to all its health and healing properties, this brand of manuka honey has a terrific taste. My husband and I use it in tea, in yogurt, on toast, and in hot cereal. It is not a low-calorie sweetener, but 60 calories per tablespoon is not that many when you consider that it also provides the body with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects that are well documented. In short, we find it an extremely valuable "superfood" to add to our daily diet.

Raw Manuka honey
As honey lover,I'm at a loss for words. There is no honey like Raw Manuka honey. Yes it is expensive, sometimes very expensive, but a reasonably priced manuka honey like this is a particular treat on my morning toast. A little in my steel cut oats is amazingly good too.
