This is Genius
If you're like me and grew up reading the Bible but long ago stopped seeing it as a religious text and you've got at least a fair grasp of modern Israeli culture, it's impossible to find fault with this film. It's packed with dozens of inside jokes and references to life in Israel, which is this satirical comedy's real target.Plotwise, God is on the hunt for recruits to monotheism and tries his luck with Abraham. To impress his potential worshiper, God lets Abraham know that the neighboring town of Sodom is scheduled for destruction in a few days when Abraham objects that he has a nephew, Lot, living there and won't become a monotheist unless Lot is spared. This is as far as the film makes any attempt to stay connected to the Biblical story, and everything after this point is best simply described as "and hilarity ensues." Lots and lots of hilarity. To be sure, this is low comedy but low comedy at its finest, and even the toilet humor has an air of sophistication about it. The jokes are extremely clever and context driven, rivaling anything in History of the World Part I, which is this movie's most obvious influence. The humor is helped along by the skill and comedic instincts of the cast members, largely drawn from Eretz Nehederet (a sort of Israeli SNL but with a stronger political bent). Everyone gives a great performance but especially to be savored were Dov Navon (whom you might know as Amjad's Jewish neighbor Natan in seasons 2-4 of Arab Labor) as Lot, Eli Finish as Bera the king of Sodom, Asi Cohen turning in a comedic performance very different from his work on Prisoners of War, and the phenomenal Mariano Idelman (Meir from Arab Labor) playing several roles. Even though she was only on screen for a short time, Orna Banai turned in a show-stealing performance as Hagar.I feel like I could watch this film again and again (and I will), but I will offer one caveat to prospective viewers: the humor that drives this film is closely wedded to the Bible and even more to Modern Israel. Since I know a fair amount about both of these, the movie worked for me at every level. It's harder for me to get a sense at how someone unfamiliar with these would react. My guess is the film would still be funny in some ways (toilet humor transcends culture, after all), but some jokes might fall flat.

Waste of my money. Defective DVD.
Great movie, but, this DVD skips repeatedly and has to be restarted repeatedly.

The Funniest
I saw this Israeli period (Biblical) movie three times before I bought it. It's way out there, just incredibly amusing and it's NOT about sodomy, although to be true to the facts the film gives it a passing, ridiculous nod. Highly recommended. If you know your Bible stories it will be even funnier for you.

Very Funny, Gaudy Version of the Story of Sodom
God (as a type of door-to-door salesman) comes to Abraham's tent to sign a deal to destroy Sodom. We then follow the plight of Lot as he deals with a 'Prince and the Pauper' narrative where he swaps places with the city mayor. Polytheism vs monotheism plays an important role in the narrative (just like Israeli history itself). This film is more in-line with 'Kids in the Hall' than Monty Python. It is NOT for children, unless they are in their late teens. I'm not going to go into detail with my youngsters what a dildo is! The movie meshes Biblical stories with modern Israeli socio-political problems and creates a wacky comedy that is often hysterical. My wife and I found it hilarious. Many parts are in bad taste, but deliberately so. There is a multitude of talent, with actors playing several characters.4 of 5 Stars. I believe it just misses being a perfect comedy, and it is probably just has to do with some of the jokes not working. Having a degree in Jewish Studies, I found it quite well done.

hilarious!
I saw this film on a flight and thought it was hilarious! If you're looking for something serious this is not the film for you. It goes from one silly spoof to another, with a little song along the way, and I enjoyed every bit of it!

Fun Flick. I think Turfseer missed some of the political humor and inside jokes. Having lived in Israel and speaking some Hebrew will make this way funnier than if you totally rely on the subtitles...I used it to practice Hebrew. Great fun.
