Wake up
This film doesn't hold back. John Carpenter goes right at the core problems of our modern civilization. It's remarkably accurate on every level. I put this on the same narrative as the Matrix. It's very eye opening for those that are wanting to wake up. For those souls wanting to sleep for another thousand lifetimes, I recommend Game of Thrones! Blessings.

I love this movie. This imho is one of Carpenter's best during his hey day. The social commentary, the to-the-point acting, and sci-fi make it as a complete package. It also features perhaps the best fight scene of any movie to date. The one liners uttered are second to none.I believe it be a relevant movie to the current state of affairs, too.

Parallel Today
John Carpenter's, "They Live", (1988) filmed decades ago, yet by comparison is a stark look into today, in the 21st century as it opens the door to post 9/11 dystopian America, the surveillance-corporate-propaganda state, where ordinary people, "the unconscious" go about their daily lives, with their heads in an electronic device (comparison), unaware of how they're being controlled by corporate bot force who limit how they think, what they think, and know their every move and location 24/7. The only way to see the dangers of the corpo-aliens who behave like the "Star Trek 'Borgs," is to put on a pair of mysterious glasses that reveal you to the "Borg Bots," you see them and they see you; you instantly become the enemy; aa source of danger and must be destroyed!. They Live is in the genre of "The Body Snatchers, Fahrenheit 451, the English Series, "The Prisoner," 1984, Lord of the Flies, and Harrison Bergeron. Then as now the corpo-state has revealed itself as the entity whose singular purpose "is to control, direct, dictate, and limit free will, independent thought, individuality, revolt or rebellion, with complete intolerance to any objection to total obedience. Not much difference to the type of governments reflected today around the world....you are in for a treat in this timeless cautionary classic film, so...watch, enjoy, and think!

thenwatch it. Don't read the jacket notes
Learn nothing about this movie if you can, then watch it.Don't read the jacket notes.Have your friends over and don't tell them what it is.Don't let anyone spoil it, if they recognize it.It is very accurate satire, and is still very culturally relevant.enjoy

I love this movie! Still stands up in 2017
It definitely has a 1980's feel, but I can't knock any stars off for that.Rowdy Roddy Piper is the man,and shows it here! When he passed a couple years ago I thought about how great it would have been to have met him.RIP Mr Piper.Back to the movie, great story line, great pretense,it's probably a love it or hate it thing since there is a little cheesyness to it,but even that is to be loved and delighted in all its 1980's goodness!Back story and feel is in a "1984" dystopian fashion that still plays out in 2017 (maybe even more so than it did in 1988).Character drama is good at times, a bit cardboard at others, fight scenes are similar, there's some very good stuff here and some places to criticize for anyone who doesn't like the movie. As someone who really likes this film I loved and enjoyed every bit of it, warts and all.Steelbook edition is very good as well, unfortunately it's "not eligible" for disc to digital scanning under programs like Vudu. Also there's maybe a dozen F-bombs,and one upper body nude shot towards the end of the movie,so keep that in mind for teensGreat movie, recommended.

Excellent film with great casting.
A mesmerizing tale of discovery of one honest, honorable, and diligently working man as he embarks on a journey to destroy a class-forming and secretive society of aliens that have penetrated our open society by manipulating. Their manipulation consists of a wide spread strategy to appear like a human being while not informing all the members of the human group that they are in fact aliens. Some people may agree that the intentions of the aliens may have been to help out the human group, but the film unravels the story in the way I would agree. Open communication is so much better for all of us than not doing so out of inconvenience.

Come for the fight scene, stay because it's a darn good flick.
Best fight scene in any movie, ever. No, seriously, this mutual beat down is glorious to nth degree. South Park based an episode on this brawl, a respectful to the original material episode. If Matt an Trey, consummate piss takers, show this kind of love for the source material maybe, just maybe there is something here you should lay your eyes on.Aside from the fight, I have a soft spot for anything made by John Carpenter, three of his films are in my personal top ten list. The story here is well told, the production values are stock-in-trade Carpenter fare, from his distinct music scores to choice of camera angles and the acting is good stuff, considering the starring roll went to a former professional (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) wrestler.

Just as good as The Thing in my opinion......
This movie absolutely blew me away, I was expecting a so-so type movie. Great plot that pretty much absorbs modern day ideology and expression. I would put this at the top of your "to buy" list. A lot like Larry Cohen's Stuff,Cronenberg's Videodrome, and Carpenters Halloween 3 Seasons of the witch. I don't do very many reviews but I never seen this movie till recently and have no clue why this doesn't get better reviews. Hopefully they never try to remake this.....classic Carpenter movie.

review for the new 4 disc set .... just received.
I've always loved this film, from the first time I saw it in theaters. I live in California and saw most Carpenter films when they came out but also being a fan of Roddy Piper this was a must see. The new 47 minute documentary is the only weak spot in this set. The sociologists spend too much time using phrases like yuppies and saying anybody with a job and a haircut was some sort of Reagan goose stepping scum. It is fascinating that after all these years the alleged subtext of this film is more true now than then. Sadly for the commentators though who claim that the "drifter" character must be a Trump endorser... its the socialist left who are the overlords in the US and particularly here in my home state of California. They control the media and own the electorate by giving out free insurance, free monthly checks and the half of the people in my state who don't pay taxes vote as told to keep their stream of goodies coming. That bit of baloney on the part of the producers of the bonus content aside, the film looks terrific , it's great to have the bonus CD soundtrack , which was always a favorite. The bonus poster , book , and prints also nice. It all comes in a box which will not disrupt your blu ray collection and all in all I consider money well spent. If you are reading this and like me live in the US and own a multi region player and want to know if it's worth the double dip.... don't value the bonus making of.... and make your judgement on the rest.

OBEY & BUY this perfect UK release of John Carpenter's Classic THEY LIVE
This release was a total surprise to me. It contains the best of both worlds. First off I owned the Scream Factory which is cool with the new artwork which is on this release and has reversible artwork of the original cover. Great extras and perfect HD quality but the only draw back was this continuing problem with the Region Lock which in this case is Region A Locked. This should not be a problem for most collector's of Blu-Rays as most have multi region players which will play anything but there are some including myself to begin with who didn't or don't own these machines (I recommend you buy one). But anyway Studio Canal to the rescue who have not only released a UK version of this classic John Carpenter movie but also included all the extras off the Scream Factory disc and flung them onto this one. I believe a similar pattern has emerged with other releases but all in all this is the perfect solution going forward especially as Scream Factory do not take orders from UK buyers as they do not ship to this part of the world. The film truly speaks its for itself, it was way ahead of its time and is just as important now as it was then. The release is perfection all the way, giving you great insights in a funny audio commentary from Carpenter himself and Roddy Piper. It also contains interviews with Keith David and Meg Foster plus much more. The cover artwork is a little off but by today's standard's is actually very cool with plenty to feast your eyes on. OBEY this release.

The hidden amongst us
Carpenters film almost seems like a documentary in this day and age of mask wearing uniformity. It's a film for those who feel alienated, an antidote to the blinkered nature of humanity. A must for any critical thinker and those who dare to go beyond the nauseating spectacle of the pack mentality. The film is very simple in its premise, but leaves one with lots of ideas that can be transposed into our current collective reality. The central character like most people is an outsider who just wants to get on with his life, hustling and minding his own business. He isn't someone seeking anything beyond survival in a jungle of scarcity. He is surrounded by signs which he is unable to see. Unintentionally his world view is changed. He then spends the rest of the film trying to convince others who were like him prior to his awakening. Again not unlike the times we live in now, whereby one cannot lead or convince any other person to go beyond their own perception, thought beliefs or indoctrination, despite everything being in plain sight. This comes with another set of problems for the central character. Great soundtrack too which eases one into a brilliant thought provoking film.

keep carpenter 4k coming!
I own the studiocanal blu-ray release of this movie from a few years back which is awesome. But these 4K releases of Carpenter classics are just too good to pass since Escape From New York is amazing on 4K considering the time it was made(the blu-ray also is remastered and blows away all previous releases!). Sad thing is I missed the 4K release of The Fog so I ordered They Live when it's in stock and pre-ordered Prince of Darkness in case they're sold out before I even notice. Please studiocanal release more Carpenter classics on 4K!I believe this release ports over all the special features from previous one and adds some new features. The blu-ray PQ and AQ also improve over the previous release. One thing I noticed is that on these studiocanal carpenter releases, the menus are all mute, i don't know if it's just my copies?

Classic 80s conspiracy thriller
Piper plays a loner/drifter looking for work who ends up meeting Keith David (The Thing) on a construction job who directs him to somewhere he can stay. Piper then notices some strange goings on in the local church which ends up being raided by the police as well as the camp he is staying in. After the raid, he goes back to the church and finds a box full of sunglasses which initially he thinks nothing of. However, when he finally tries a pair on, he discovers that he can 'see' what's really going on in society and the authoritarian system of control that most people are blissfully unaware of. After a fight, he teams up with David in order to do something about the alien/demonic creatures that have taken over the country. Overall great ideas, if not slightly dated, but still very relevant today. Recommended.
