The Titanic - The Epic Mini-Series Event

The One-Star Reviews are Unfair
Look folks, this is a made-for-tv movie. They can't have a $200 million budget if they are not selling tickets. They make their money back from commercials. Therefore, they cannot make a film like this and have it last only 2 hours on television. It has to be a mini-series which airs over 4 nights in order to sell enough commercials to make it profitable. As a result, it has to draw out the stories and is a little like a soap opera. That's the only way TV movies can fly. That being said, I enjoyed every minute of it. If you like the Titanic story, then you'll enjoy the tragedy regardless of the storyline. I also enjoyed the other mini-series from 2012 as well for the same reasons. It's a good presentation and they did a good job on it. It wasn't expensive, and it delivered for me. George C. Scott does a good job in whatever he is in. Some of the graphics were a little cartoonish, but this was before computers and you can use your imagination. If you're that picky and expect perfect, then you won't find it. Even the Cameron film had that ridiculous gun-chase. The boat is sinking, we're all going to die in an hour, yet I'm so out of control with my jealousy emotions that you got my girl that I'm going to run around the ship with a gun and shoot you. And the Rose story with the jewels was also ridiculous. So none of the Titanic presentations are perfect, but this mini-series was entertaining to me, and I'll watch it again in a few years. If you read my review and liked it, please let me know. I suspect no one reads these.

It absolutely has its moments, but at times is just dreadful.
I wish I could give this 2.5 stars honestly. For the price, I have no problem adding this relatively obscure addition to my Titanic collection.George C. Scott and Roger Rees are legends and put in (while not Emmy worthy) solid performances. Tim Curry is also strong as is Zeta-Jones. Those four alone are worth at least a star and a half of this review. The story lines running tangential to the sinking itself are pretty scattered and fleeting and I wish they could have cut one of them.I won’t spoil it, but the conclusion at the very end of part 2 is quite nice and was one of the highlights in the rather flat overall writing. Now to the drawbacks:1. The CGI is often REALLY bad, even by 1990’s standards. It’s not even just the quality and how it was mixed into live shots, there are several instances where everything is just wildly out of proportion with its surroundings.2. There inaccuracies and anachronisms were distracting at times. (Two of the more glaring ones is the 50-star flag seen at the end and the modern deck machinery on the Carpathia) This started right from the top of part 1 with the crowd on the starboard rather than the port side and the incorrect statement saying the trip was booked solid (it wasn’t even close). And then the showers that didn’t exist anywhere on the ship and the caption mistaking what CQD stands for. And then there were things like the changing ceiling over the grand staircase, the dining room being in the wrong place, the Marconi room being presumably part of the purser’s office, the interior of the bridge, the added bar in the smoking room (that Brown As a woman would never have been in), the Statue of Liberty being the wrong color, multiple passengers boarding at the wrong port, the daylight during the sinking on at least one interior scene, etc.

Not perfect, but still a fun watch.
While the series got panned by several critics, I'm not so locked into the actual history where I can't enjoy a fictional story. Everyone points to the following year's Titanic as being the best, but if you check, you'll see that it's essentially a remake of "A Night To Remember" with a love story layered on top. Don't get me wrong, James Cameron did a fantastic job with his production and attention to detail, but I watch movies for the story, I don't usually pay that much attention to all the little details the first time I see it. Besides, the price was right.

A dark Titanic movie
A lot is said about the characters and how their development makes this version attractive vs. the James Cameron movie. For the most part, as I watched this TV movie I didn't feel drawn to any of the main protagonists that were added to the plot for the purpose of giving texture and humanization to the story we all know. It just all felt flat for me. In fact, some of these characters were so gratuitously dark that there was not much left to contrast with the emotions prompted by the Titanic disaster itself. A shame considering the real acting talent that was gathered on the set. On the bright side, I did enjoy how Captain Smith in particular, Ismay and some of the central historical players were developped.

Titanic (1996 TV version) - A much preferred option that preceded James Cameron's 1997 film
Excellent movie! It was released the year before James Cameron's Titanic. This 1996 version may not have the glitz and glamour of a DiCaprio and Winslett (excellent in their own right), but it holds its own as a high-quality acting - and action - performance. The entire cast was excellent, as the acting was sincere and believable. Catherine Zeta Jones was outstanding (good story line with Peter Gallagher), as was George C. Scott (Capt. Smith), Scott Hylands (J. J. Astor), and Roger Rees (J. Bruce Ismay). You could see the shock and regret in Ismay's face during and after the sinking. The movie just as fully brings to life Molly Brown, Madeleine Astor (rarely seen or heard in other versions), and the crew of the Titanic, especially Kavan Smith as Fifth Officer Lowe's reflections on the Carpathia. There's more attention given - as it should have been - to the Californian and behind the scenes of the Carpathia (great work by Terence Kelly as Capt. Rostron). As equally meaningful was the score and supporting music, especially the closing melody, by Lennie Niehaus, as well as the image productions (no need for the special effects of Cameron's version when you've got a fine cast). Very much worth the purchase for 3 hours of worthwhile - and historical - viewing!
