Q: How wide are the bands?

The three smallest sizes of bands are 5 mm (~ 3/16") wide, and the seven largest sizes of bands are 7 mm (~ 9/32") wide.

Q: Before it is crimped, can the clamp be opened to fit over a hose? Or does it have to slide over the end of the hose?

You fit them to hose by size and the crimping will tighten them perfectly! This is a quality product
