Grasp the base with one hand. With the other hand, pry open lid.

Q: Roughly how much loose pipe tobacco would this hold? I've been losing too much due to drying out, but I smoke a lot so I need something big enough...

It's pretty small, I'd say about an 8th.....go 1 size up to the vault that has the 3 clasp on it, you will be glad you did. That of course is assuming you at anytime need space for more than a few G's

Q: do the lid notches wear out leaving an bad seal?

No, the notches and seal are on two seperate parts of the lid. No wear and tear at all.
