In Real Life: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age Paperback – September 2, 2014

First of all, kudos to Nev for the releasing of this really personal and interesting book. I have to admit that I didn't really know the story of Nev, at all. I'd seen a couple of Catfish episodes, but I had no idea there was such a moving story behind it all. If you're familiar with his previous work, and the TV show then you know what this is about. But I'd really like to say, that this is the perfect book for someone like me. If you've ever been catfished, or had anything similar happen to you, you MUST read this. I was instantly hooked, because since the very beginning of the introduction, I could already relate to all of it. And it just gets better and better. It really does feel like a really long, detailed and honest conversation with Nev. I could see myself in every single page, my story and his, so similar it certain ways. And I know this has happened to A LOT of people out there. Well, no wonder the show's on for its 4th season. And that is only a very little amount of people that have gone through it. You can only imagine how many more have gone through it too and are probably too embarrassed to tell anyone.The book itself is written in a very personal way, very honest and just straightforward. I found it really hard to disengage at any point, I just kept going until I finished. After reading it, I can really say my whole point of view regarding all online relationships and our ways of communicating through social media, have completely changed. Besides from narrating his personal catfish experience, Nev really goes all out explaining how these social media online relationships work and all the basics, the do's and the dont's; But mainly, the importance of engaging in an offline relationship rather than an online relationship. It really is an eye-opener, makes you realize how much time we invest in our social media bubble, and sometimes forget about the real world out there.After reading this book, I must say, I have real admiration for Nev Schulman. Learning about his story makes you realize that even after the roughest of paths he had to cross to get to where he is, it really is possible to get there. Even if it means stumbling upon some rocks along the way.Long story short -- MUST READ for all of us who are way too into the social media world.

Of all the non-fiction books I read, this is my ULTIMATE FAVORITE. As someone who is not new into dating people I met online, and making interactions with people I just saw on social media, I recommend this book - it changed the way I look at life we live physically and the life we live on social media. There are many significant take aways that you can learn from here and best realized in real life. After reading this book, I have a complete change of perspective on "managing" real life versus "virtual" life. Especially nowadays, I believe 80% of the people seeks self validation from people online.I recommend this book, for people who are:1. Experienced online dating, both successful and not succesfull2. Tired of living a life full of nonsense - from people you barely know from online3. For those who are hopeless romantic, and wanted something new and REAL4. Those who want to live a happy life - free from pretentious people, lies, and self esteem issues.

What better person to write about being on social media than Nev? He tells his story of being catfished, and creating a movie and show about it. He also gives readers advice on how to navigate social media without being on standby the whole time. Good read for anyone who is online!

One of the best, most powerfully intriguing books I've ever read.I was totally blown away once I learned about the person Nev was before the whole Catfish ordeal began; I just can't see him being such a dick, since the way he is on the show is so full of optimism and empathy.Not only do you learn about Nev's personal background and his own Catfish story (much more details than the movie includes, if you've seen it), but also really just a 360-degree spectrum of social media and online interactions/relationships--such as how people have learned to portray themselves online and why, and how the digital age is pretty much destroying our ability to function in person (rather than from behind a screen).I had checked it out from the library, but had to buy my own copy so I can highlight specific points/quotes and take notes.(Wow, I must really miss college...)

Not only has Mr Schulman written a great story about his personal experience with a Catfish but he generously advises us how to live our lives both online but mostly in rral.life (offline.). Well written and powerful. A must read.

Overall its not a bad book and it does have some interesting information. But it came with too many assumptions about why people use social media so much and it's a bit more of an autobiography than I was interested in reading. It would have been great too have a checklist for people to go down if they want to find out of their "friend" is a catfish. I couldn’t finish it.

My mother loves Catfish so I got her this book...she said she loved it and it was super interesting!

I bought this for research for the psychology behind those who catfish. And heck, I love the show. But Nev goes beyond that to get you thinking about loving yourself and looking at your own sometimes destructive if not at least distracting social media habits. He reveals his weaknesses and mistakes honestly to show that we can all change for the better.

Io, come credo chiunque, ho iniziato a seguire le sue avventure tramite la serie Catfish. La sua storia mi ha incuriosito ed ecco che il tutto mi ha spinto all'acquisto del suo libro. Molto interessante, lettura scorrevole in cui Nev cerca di dare qualche consiglio per quanto riguarda il mondo dei social network. Approvato.Nota: inutile dire che lo consiglio se siete abituè alla lettura in inglese dato che alcuni termini non sono facili di comprensione.

This was a great book! I was a fan of Nev's before but this made me like him even more. Excellent look at life on the net.

Nachdem ich die Sendung Catfish sehr gerne sehe, habe ich mich für die Hintergründe (Nevs eigene Geschichte) interessiert. Unglaublich! Nev ist ein intelligenter Bursche, mein Englisch hat sich verbessert, das Buch ist interessant für jeden, der im Internet verkehrt (tun wir ja alle) und leicht zu lesen.

Excellent read. Couldn't put it down. Great insight into minds of catfish and their "victims" as well as a great insight into the leadings of catfish the TV show from Nev's experiences.Really makes you reflect on your own behaviours and makes you want to change.
