Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire, Fourth Edition

Highly recommended for piano lovers
This is a wonderful resource for pianists. I worked my way through the book cover to cover, using youtube.com and other streaming services. It took over two years. While much of it I don't care for or even find offensive, I respect the authors' authority on the subject. I discovered many composers this way. There are 2,030 composers listed with their important works, plus anthologies of solo piano music covering certain eras or regions. Each entry lists important works, often with a short description of the music. Works are rated one of four difficulty levels (easy, intermediate, moderately difficult, difficult). If you're like me and not a great sight reader, you may find approximately 57.39% of the composers listed either have no commercial recordings available of their piano works or the recordings are out of print. If you can read music and have a good library nearby, you may fare better. It's been wonderful (and shocking, and confusing) discovering new music through this book. I highly recommend it to curious people, piano teachers, and musicians.

Fantastic resource for performer, teacher, and hobbyist pianist.
I have owned the previous editions of Hinson's guides and used them over and over to find interesting and well crafted pieces that are "off the beaten track." I also love the listings of editions available. The ratings are very helpful, and the scholarship is of the highest quality. I have found pieces to add to my solo recital programs that are wonderful and unique, pieces for my students that are perfect when I am looking for music for small hands or "easy sounds hard." It's also a great guide to the immense world of classical music publishing when the choices seem overwhelming. I appreciate this reference book very much and love this latest edition. Lots of new composers included.
