Weller’s best period of solo music. No download from Amazon when buying the vinyl (which you normally get with vinyl purchases) Glad they reissued this.

If you are reading this, the chances are you already know this is a great compilation of Mr Weller’s solo career, however, the sound of the vinyl is compressed and lacks dynamics (used high end equipment). I don’t know what they were thinking to include 55 mins or so of the original album on a single vinyl, but what I do know is that this was a very poor decision. Buy on Cd if you don’t have it on this format already and save your hard-earned cash for something else that is made with more respect and appreciation for the artist and vinyl lovers alike.

La carriera solista di Paul Weller va distinta tra quello che il personaggio ha saputo fare come icona assoluta del mondo Mod e la sua musica. Dal punto di vista del look e della figaggine, Paul non ha mai avuto concorrenti. Lui è il Modfather e l'età non ha scalfito di un oncia il suo status inarrivabile di icona di classe e stile. Dal punto di vista musicale invece, il suo rock sanguigno e piuttosto tradizionale, fortemente ancorato ai riferimenti dei seventies, non mi ha mai esaltato particolarmente. Ci sono stati album splendidi come "Wild wood" e "Stanley Road" ma anche tante cadute di tono e dischi minori. Un "best of" è sicuramente il compendio migliore per conoscere l'artista, specialmente se poi comprende, nella versione deluxe, uno splendido live ruspante e incisivo, registrato nel lontano '98 in una torrida serata al Victoria Park di Londra. Certo se ripenso al riff di "Going Underground" ancora mi viene nostalgia per quello che Paul Weller ha saputo essere per un'intera generazione, ma i tempi cambiano e l'uomo ha saputo cambiare con loro. Questa è la forza del "changing man", la capacità di cambiare insieme al tempo, mantenendo inalterata la capacità di fare musica e stile in maniera sempre contemporanea. Un idolo assoluto!

Great best of vinyl from his studio albums. And the bonus live album is classic.

Songs are great but the records sound awful. You cannot put 8 songs on each side of a vinyl record and then expect it to sound right. There is lack of dynamics and sound stage. When I bought it, I though the songs of the CD were spread across the 2 records. But that's not the case, they are squeezed on 1 record and additional live tracks are on the other record. That seems nice, but is really a bad decision.
