Wow. The "blue books" are the most popular Hawaii guidebooks and it's for a good reason. They hands down, have the best layout and arrangement of any guidebook I've ever used. When you open it up, everything is presented in a fashion that makes it extremely easy to break down the different regions of the island. A ton of useful colorful maps are included to further make navigation a breeze. The single biggest advantage of these guides is the ability to pick it up and immediately pinpoint several attractions for a given area. When I used their Oahu book last year, I literally used it as a page by page tour guide to the north shore, Ko Olina, the windward side of the island and other points away from the huge crowds of Waikiki. This Kauai book is no exception. It's full of colorful photos and tons of helpful guidance on things to do, places to visit and where to eat. Granted, these books are hugely popular, so it's highly unlikely you'll be alone at most of these attractions. However, if you don't feel like scouring the internet and writing down or printing everything you find, this is much more handy to have. I literally keep it by my side the entire trip.Compared to the competition, these blue guidebooks are consistently the best option available. They'll often have more attractions listed than the competition although discretion is always advised. Every attraction isn't for every person. They also offer extremely helpful advice on issues that even the web cannot always solve. For example, after poring over hundreds of online reviews of zip line companies in Kauai, I was still unsure which outfit I preferred. I opened this guidebook and immediately found the company I'd prefer to use in under five minutes. The book hit all the key points that hundreds of web reviews missed, namely length of the lines, highest speeds attained, quality of the scenery and expected wait times. And, thankfully, the one thing it doesn't do is pander to businesses. You get the straight truth here, no sugarcoating. Web reviews usually offered little more than personal opinions of the overall experience or the guides. This guide gave me actual useful information to make an informed decision. And that's how the book approaches pretty much everything it suggests. If it's great, it will say so. If not so great, it will share that as well. If you can only get one guidebook, grab this one. I have several recent volume guidebooks for Kauai and this is by far the best.

We spent a week in Kauai and used this guide and a separate snorkel guide specific to beaches and underwater features, but the beach info in this book was great. I don't like blogs and websites, I like an actual book for trip planning. This guide had everything we needed, really helped when trying to locate trailheads or beach parking areas, gave great advice. I used it for trip planning and it was with us every day on the island. Very accurate descriptions and great recommendations for all parts of the island for all sorts of activites, food, sites, etc. If you are planning a trip to Kauai, this is a must buy. You won't regret it. This has great maps and pictures throughout, unlike another guidebook I purchased and returned. Drive times described in the maps were also accurate, which helped in planning. Overall great purchase.

I purchased this guidebook after reading about in on several blogs while planning my honeymoon in Kauai and I'm very glad that I did! It contains a plethora of useful information including island culture, lodging, food, shopping, beaches, and my favorite part- adventures. If nothing else, buy it for the hiking information. It contains a section for each section of the island, beaches, and adventures with maps and recommendations. It helped narrow down the thousands of things to do on the island in a way that isn't overwhelming, is easily digestible, and is a pleasure to read (the author has a great sense of humor).I am an avid reader of reviews and planned some parts of our trip out based on Google reviews prior to reading this book. Honestly those were the worst parts of our trip and I wished I had waited until I had this guide. You will find that several things on the island have "target populations" that they are marketed to and if you're not part of that population, a good review may not mean it's good for you! Do yourself a favor and purchase this guide before you plan your trip.

we just went to Kauai over Christmas/New Years break and it was such a wonderful trip!Everything we did, we used the tips and advise from this book and was not disappointed!!! Such great infowe stayed in Lihue at The Marriott Beach Clubrented a car from airport (cheaper than getting from hotel and its just a shuttle ride to airport from hotel)Took the car and went to the North Shore for a full day - Anini beach was our favorite but had fun visiting Hanalei Bay, Tunnels Beach and Ke'e beach as well. on the way back to Lihue that evening, We stopped at the best Mexican food spot in Kapaa called Verde. we got the yummiest margaritas and burritos! However, do not mistake this location for the Lihue location... not the same at all and you will be disappointed!!We did the Captain Andy's 5.5 hour Napoli coast catamaran tour and loved it. lots of dolphin and whale watching. beautiful way to see the south and west side of the island. That afternoon we spent the day cruising the south shore and relaxed on Kekaha Beach. Stayed there to watch the sunset. Such a beautiful day! On the way back to Lihue, we stopped in Poipu to eat dinner at Keokis Paradise. Such a fun spot!Yes, we also did the helicoptor tour and went with Blue Hawaiian and had a great time. WOW, this is a must do on your trip! you get to see the entire island and the pilots are fun and knowledgeable. Blue Hawaiian was also super easy for us to get to...our hotel shuttle took us to their bay at the airport.Enjoy your trip!!!

So much info packed into this book! Study the book before you go so you know what you want to do, then when you get on island, download the companion app from the App Store. It is an absolutely necessary, informative, and helpful guide to traveling around the island sightseeing. It is linked to your GPS so "the guide" always knows where you are and points out attractions along the way. We would have missed out on so much without this guide. Well worth the money!
