SSAT & ISEE Vocabulary

Vocabulary that sticks!
This book makes a point not to just teach vocabulary, but gives students tips and an understanding of how to actually increase their vocabulary, not just memorize it. It includes pronunciation guides (that your student can actually understand!), which was nice to see. There are over 200 words to learn, and this makes up the bulk of the book. After that, there is a section for review (21 pages of exercises), followed by an answer key.The only thing I would mention about this book is that there are British English signs throughout, so unless your child has an Anglophile mom who's raising them on BritBox and Acorn (ahem... me... ), there might be some explaining to do. For example, in one section they talk about memorizing with rhymes, and "fertile" rhyming with "mile" was the example used. In British English, that is definitely the pronunciation, but in the States, you'll her "fertile" rhyme with, maybe, "turtle" more often. Another place where they mentioned a "football pitch". It's a silly little thing, but kids in the US might not know what that is.Overall, it's a great book. I'll be using it with my children to help increase their standardized test, ACT, and SAT scores.

Very easy to use for any student
This book is intended to help students pass the vocabulary portion of the SSAT/ISEE tests. The author advocates a different way to memorize vocabulary words. Instead of just memorizing the word, the student should associate the word with a word that rhymes that the student already knows. Those words are put together into a silly picture or sentence that the student will remember. Here are a couple of examples of such sentences. An eagle is not a Feeble creature. You can't Grate grapes. His Prominent nose is his dominant feature. Enemies Conspired to take over the empire. The vocabulary word is the one with capital first letter. This easy to use book also includes review exercises in the back of the book, with answers included. This book is not just recommended for students preparing for the SSAT/ISEE tests. It is also recommended for any student who just wants to improve their vocabulary.

Creative and engaging way to teach vocabulary!
SSAT & ISEE Vocabulary by J. Stone is a great way to introduce and prepare students at a young age to become successful when standardized testing. This book explains the importance of comprehending and applying vocabulary vs. simple memorization. Important concepts and vocabulary are easily found in bold lettering to insure understanding. This book can also be used as a wonderful dictionary for children. Each page is outlined with a vocabulary word in bold, followed by: the pronunciation, what part of speech the word can be used as, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, rhymes, and full sentences using the word highlighted in bold. Each page includes fun and captivating images to help children visualize for added comprehension. My young cousin, who is ten years old, studied this book and absolutely loved it! She loved reading each page to me and I often found her roaring at the hilarity of the illustrations. She was genuinely interested in the content and occasionally would ask me further questions about a word. She started creating mad libs with the words she had learned from this book and incorporates them in her stories. I feel this book really aided in enriching her vocabulary and I was amazed at how fun and easy it is to understand! I would definitely recommend purchasing this book!

Excellent vocabulary resource!
Vocabulary is one of the more challenging areas of language skills for young children and teenagers. It involves a lot of memorization and flash cards, and frankly can become rather boring, but this book has taken the bore away and swapped it with fun. SSAT & ISEE Vocabulary by J. Stone is an excellent addition to any English language studies you may be conducting. The book is filled with hundreds of words that have corresponding cartoons, these two things together will help increase your child’s word retention skills. Each page also has examples of the words in use, as well as catchy lines to help solidify the work that the child has completed. The diverse cartoons found throughout the book are appropriate for the word they are drawn with. These unique and quirky images provide another level of learning that children may be better suited to understand. Combining images, phrases of use, and even words that rhyme with the subject allowed my children to excel on the Secondary School Admission Test, and not only that, it also put them ahead in the classroom, as an added bonus!

Fun & Easy Learning
I absolutely love this book. The exercises are so different from other vocabulary books I've purchased for my daughter. Since she is not good at spelling, homework with words is difficult for her. This book's exercises are so quick, fun, and easy, it's been the least painful homework she's had to do for me. I also really like the phonetic spelling of each word listed in the lessons. This book will be a game-changer for us this summer.

Fun and easy to follow
This is a really fun book that will help kids learn quickly and with ease. The cartoons are well-drawn and appropriate for the age group. As the text translated the words to the pictures it will help students retain words easier. It will enhance the student's vocabulary by introducing new words in a way that will allow them to remember easily. The combination of the illustrations, sample sentences, and rhymes is especially useful.

Perfect for Young Learners
This is the perfect book for young learners. I believe the way it's set up will help children absorb and retain the information much more easily than other books that have been written for this age group. Not only that, it's fun and funny and the kids enjoy doing their work.

Interesting and helpful
Offers interesting explanation and example sentences for each word. Makes memorizing these words easier. But not enough words are included. Need other vocabulary books to get a more profound preparation for the test.
