Superman Rebirth 1

A Super Rebirth
Rebirth is an attempt by DC to restore continuity to what it was prior to Flashpoint which seems like a pretty explicit way of saying that the New 52 was a failure. In the case of Superman they literally killed the New 52 Superman and replaced him with the post-Crisis Superman and this was all done in continuity. The post-Crisis Superman would be the same Superman who fought Doomsday to the death. Once the New 52 Superman is swept out of the way we establish the dynamics of the new series. Superman is married to Lois Lane. They have a ten year old son named Jon and now go by the last name Smith. Very creative. Post-Crisis Superman was creating this family even as New 52 Superman was doing his thing so now the world has simply swapped one Superman for another. Personally, I couldn’t care less which Superman is Superman but I like the idea of the family.Superman has always been my favorite DC superhero but for decades I collected far more Batman stories because they were simply much better. The Man of Steel is a very difficult character to write because of his near omnipotence and omniscience but I think the tide has finally swung back in Superman’s favor. I find the Scott Snyder/Jeff King Batman stories practically unreadable because they have taken the perfect Batman to his absurd limit. Batman has become flawless while Superman has become more relatable. Superman is raising a son while Batman whines about his long dead parents. Superman is hopeful, Batman is insufferable. I gave Batman Rebirth three stars only because I thought the artwork was fantastic. This is the first Rebirth collection I’ve REALLY enjoyed. Besides the addition of a son we also get the return of the Eradicator. The Eradicator wants to restore Krypton and plans to ‘eradicate’ the human half of Jon’s DNA. What follows is a six-part battle between the Superman family, including Lois, and the Eradicator. This story arc was fine but unspectacular. It was when the focus went on Superman’s son Jon that things really pick up. Superman and Jon travel back to the 1940’s and meet Captain Storm of the Losers who is battling dinosaurs. It’s a tribute to Darwyn Cooke, who passed away last year, and I loved it. Next, Jon meets Damian Wayne and the two form a contentious team. The final story arc features a team up with Frankenstein and for me this was another winner. I enjoyed the heck out of the whole book and the art is simply spectacular cover to cover.I really like the way DC is handling Rebirth, releasing cheaper paperback volumes and then going straight to the Deluxe Editions. Because this contains the first 13 issues of Superman means I needed to wait well over a year before I got the Deluxe Edition but I’m cool with that. I paid less than $24 for 13 issues of Superman and issue #1 of Superman: Rebirth so if you bought all the comics it would be over $40. Plus, the image size of the Deluxe Editions are a fair amount larger than a comic book. The paper quality is awesome and the artwork looks gorgeous. It’s like a smaller version of an Absolute Edition except super reasonably priced. The fly in the ointment has tended to be the writing. Even as the artwork and presentation quality has continued to improve, much of the writing at DC has been lacking but this book hits on all cylinders. Great Job, DC.

One of the best graphic novels I've ever gotten my hands on!
I had originally read all the contained issues of Superman in digital format (as they were released), but I enjoyed them so much, I didn't mind paying for the same material twice - and I'm very glad I did! This is one of the finest graphic novels I've ever acquired, and based on the quality, I intend to get many more of the Deluxe editions, particularly Action Comics, Detective Comics, and Batman. The first thing that popped out at me was the size of the pages themselves. These pages are freaking big! I'm not talking about the number of pages - I mean the pages are literally bigger, in terms of width and height. This makes a HUGE difference, even though the enhancements are relatively small, because this series features such beautiful artwork. Everything pops, and you can really appreciate the work that went into the page layouts. The page quality is excellent, as well - nice and thick and glossy, with rich colors and dark inks.Patrick Gleason does an excellent job bringing this series to life with his pencil work, and we can see a lot of similarities in the father/son dynamic of Clark and Jonathan Kent that he perfected while drawing Bruce and Damian Wayne in the Batman and Robin series from the New 52. But now that Superman is published twice monthly, it's too much work for any one artists, so Doug Mahnke and Jorge Jiminez have been brought in for reinforcements. Fortunately, their work is just as good, and although their styles different, they somehow go perfectly with Gleason's, never interrupting the feeling of continuity between issues. Mahnke's work is particularly excellent on the two part "Escape From Dinosaur Island" arc, and Jiminez pencils one of my favorite Superman issues of all time, featuring nothing more than the Kent Family enjoying an evening at the county fair. Special consideration also needs to be given to the inkers and colorists, who bring this series together beautifully, resulting in a spectacular, heart-warming, exhilarating visual feast. As for the writing, Peter Tomasi is once more at the top of his game, and his crafting of the father/son relationship seems so unforced and authentic (something he also worked on in Batman and Robin), all the while propelling Supes through a string of adventures that are both thrilling and pertinent to the larger DC universe. So it goes without saying... do yourself the favor of picking up the deluxe edition, rather than the normal TPBs. It's about the same price (this book contains Volumes 1 and 2 of the paperbacks), and the additional quality in materials is simply astounding. We need more graphic novels like this!

Great for beginning comic readers
For someone like me who’s just getting into the comics scene this was a great place to pick up. In the past I’ve been turned off by some of the directions modern comics have headed but this set of storylines really kept my attention and I flew through reading it. Wasn’t sure how I’d like the idea of Superman having a family but as it turns out I enjoyed it so much I decided to head to the justice league collection next.

Great feel of the classic superman. Honor, power, confident. Oldschool supes. The son arc is done nicely, giving oldschool superman and Clark

Was so looking forward to this with the stellar work the team did on Batman and Robin but its missing something and i don't know what, certainly not a bad book just feels like there is nothing at stake.

"When it comes to Superman, no one else even comes close."
I read it two times. First time it was good but second time it was COOL. I started my rebirth reding with Batman I Am Gotham and I loved that emotional tragedy completely. Superman rebirth starts with some events where one Superman dies and the other comes out of shadows as the Colors Should Always Fly. Some events can confuse you so its better to get your hands on some previous comics from DC52.Superman Rebirth One Shot and Son of Superman are really.. what we can say.. it's just what you are expecting. Or more than expectations. Story loses its fun when Damian and Jon (Son of Superman) meet. I didn't like the way Super fathers were trying to teach them.. play tag. They were doing good but I couldn't connect myself with the story. And also Damian seems like a fool here. He surely shows his experience and ability but still Jon wins heart.Well. It's Superman so it's full of learnings. I always admire Superman. Even after having all those world shattering powers, he is still so humble and so calm and decent. He talk so politely and it melts the heart. Everytime. He says so many great lines likes..... It's not about our heat vision or super strength or flying power. It's about characters. Its about doing the right things when no one else will. And when no one is watching....There is never 'I' jon....Every action doesn't deserve a reaction..These are not what he said exactly but he said something like that.I would highly recommend DC Rebirth and this is a good point to start reading adventures of new (old) Superman again.

Meet the super sons
Well i think DC is doing everything right with the rebirth universe. The crossovers, the connections and now the sons. I have not had so much fun reading superman since kingdom come. The superman and son and super sons is sheer treat from dc.Also since i got the deluxe edition i have to mention this, the hardcover is gorgeoussssss. All these rebirth deluxe editions have these crazy hardcovers. My fav is the batman detective comics 1 though. The redish toned hardcover on that one is insane.
