This is the thickness of about two (new &flat) standard filter frames. This material is semi-ridgid, very flexible but it looks like a giant flat kitchen sponge made from foam, not cellulose. Use a pair of decently sharp shears to cut to whatever size you need. I recommend using an old frame filter as your size guide.PROS: It works. Thick enough to actually filter like a sponge filter with the advantageous floss layers like a frame filter as well, a very hybrid filter medium. Lots of thickness to lodge and begin beneficial bacteria growth. At this price one could use then discard rather than rinse with dechlorinated water and reuse a time or two. GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY.CONS: Not much of a charcoal layer, the picture looked thicker than the reality. You may wish to add a small bag of charcoal if odor or yellow water is a problem for you. A balanced tank won't need it. Also, depending on your filter, the spongy material may need the skeleton of an old frame filter to keep it in place.CONCLUSION: It is doing fine in my 3 tanks without using any frame but I can see where a frameless filter could become an issue for some, esp. if you cut the material on the small side. Do normal maintenance and the next sentence will *not* apply to you. Keep a watch on your filter for overflow/blowback as this product has fine pores, and when the surface clogs it will send water around rather than through....Overall I am pleased, and would/will buy again.

Have to clean too often

I do 3 layers of this product and even have leftover for my buddy. My water is ultra clear. I did clean it already so I can surly see it can be recharged.

Noticeable improvement in water clarity within 2 days of putting this in. It's easy to cut with sharp scissors. I will never go back to floss filters again!

I should have bought a bigger roll.I don’t recommend cleaning it. The outer mesh falls off fairly easily, especially after cutting too size. So use it till it’s no gross and toss it. It’ll will last a while though, mine does and I have a sand substrate.

I use it in the turtle tank water filter. It really filters a lots of dirt from the water. It is easy to clean it.
