ANISE STAR vs. ANISE SEED ESSENTIAL OILS
NONE OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS ARE APPROVED BY THE U.S. FDA OR ANY MEDICAL PROFESSION, AND ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE USED AS MEDICAL ADVICE FOR THE TREATMENT OF ANY ILLNESS. PLEASE CONSULT A LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OR PHYSICIAN IN THE USE OF ANY ESSENTIAL OILS.Despite the similarities in the name, flavor, aroma, and therapeutic properties, Anise Seed and Star Anise come from two very different plant families, which surprisingly are completely unrelated. Both have a licorice-like flavor and aroma and are often used interchangeably in cooking as long as the huge difference of the flavoring intensity is understood between these two. Unfortunately, many essential oil and spice manufactures confuse these two by calling their product by one of the two names, and then showing a photo of the other, or even worse, confusing the scientific names of the two plants. But the following should clear up much of the confusion:STAR ANISEStar Anise (aka, Chinese Anise, Badian Anise, and Aniseed which is also that by which common Anise Seed is sometimes referred and generates much confusion) is native to Asian origins, specifically the warm climate areas of China. The plant is an evergreen tree that can grow from 12 to 30 feet (3.6 to 9.1 meters) in height, but has been known to grow as high as 65 feet (19.8 meters) in some areas. It is of the botanical families, Illiciaceae or Schisandraceae (also to which Magnolia trees belong), and is known by the scientific name, Illicium Verum (see 1st photo below). The essential oil of Star Anise comes from the seeds contained inside a fruit pod produced by this evergreen tree, but some manufacturers use the fruit pod itself in the extraction of the oil. This fruit pod is usually an eight-pointed, star-shaped pod in appearance, which is where the tree gets its name (see 2nd photo below). When cooked, Star Anise produces much stronger flavoring than common Anise Seed, but has a weaker aroma or fragrance than common Anise Seed when diffused as an essential oil. Both have licorice-like aromas and tastes. The primary chemical constituents of Star Anise are anethole (up to 89%), foeniculin, methyl chavicol, limonene, linalool, nerolidol, cinnamyl acetate, and shikimic acid (7% - highest found among plants).ANISE SEEDAnise Seed (aka, Egyptian Anise Seed, Common Anise, Anise, and Aniseed which is also that by which Star Anise is sometimes referred to as and generates much confusion) is native to Italy, Egypt and Greece, and comes from a much smaller herbal plant that only grows to about 24 inches (about 61 centimeters) in height. It is of the botanical families, Apiaceae or Umbelliferae (also to which dill and parsley belong), and is known by the scientific names, Pimpernella Anisum, Anisum Officinalis, or Ansium Vulgare (see 3rd photo below). The essential oil of Anise Seed comes from the seeds and leaves of this much smaller herbal plant (see 4th photo below). When cooked, common Anise Seed produces a substantially weaker flavoring than Star Anise, but has a stronger aroma or fragrance than Star Anise when diffused as an essential oil. Both have a licorice-like aroma and taste. The primary chemical constituents of common Anise Seed are anethole (up to 95%), limonene, estragole, anisol, linalool, anisic aldehyde, and methyl chavicol.THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES:The therapeutic properties of the essential oils produced from both Star Anise and common Anise Seed have been used in many ancient cultures for their antiviral, anti-fungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and estrogen-like properties. They have also been used as a remedy to quell nausea and vomiting, as a digestive aide, a breath freshener, for dry congestive coughs, an expectorant, for bronchitis, colds, flu, strengthening of the respiratory system, asthma, a heart stimulant and tonic, for heart palpitations, a mood pick-me-up stimulant, muscle aches and pains, rheumatism, prostate cancer (when blended with Frankincense), irritable bowel syndrome, a lactation stimulant for breast feeding, menopausal hot flashes, PMS, stress, tension, and PTSD.Some of the major therapeutic differences between the two types of Anise is that Star Anise contains a significant amount of "Shikimic Acid," and when combined with the supplement flavonoid, "Quercetin," makes a very powerful antiviral, microbial antioxidant that is also highly effective in fighting influenza type A and influenza type B. The active ingredient in the pharmaceutical prescription, "Tamiflu(R)" is Shikimic Acid. One other contrast between the two types of Anise is that because of the more intense licorice-like aroma found in the common Anise Seed (Pimpernella Anisum), it has been found to have an aphrodisiac effect on some but not all women.

Great for the price/SORRY THIS WAS FOR PEPPERMINT OIL!
I use this to keep the mice away from my lawn tractor, and other small engine implements. Also my Chicken coop. I diluted with water 75 to 1. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the areas where the mice would make nests. In the chicken coop I placed cotton balls in a holder made with window screen and hang them in several locations. It works great and I don’t have to put out poison to control the mice.
