Don't Waste Your Money, Especially if You're Studying on Your Own.
There were two things I liked in Chapter 1 of this book - the few cultural insights and the glossary at the end of the chapter and the back of the book. What I didn't like: there were too few exercises in the book, at least in Chapter 1; of those, the only ones that had answers in the back of the book were insultingly simple - there was no challenge in those questions. For the other exercises (without answers), I had to trust that my answers were correct and still checked some answers with the book I'm using for an "on-ground" Italian course I'm taking. Also, you can't get all of the instruction in one place: for example, the book often directs you to the "Connect" program, which is online. Then, if you want to get into any depth of grammar and usage, you have to go to the back of the book. Why the authors chose to scatter knowledge in different media (and different sections of the book) I don't understand. Another thing I didn't like was the apparent demand to register on the Italian version of Facebook. Why should I have to register with a company who allowed a huge data breach in April 2018? I hope that classroom instructors are not mandating this for the students; if that happens, I hope the students correctly and justifiably protest and refuse to do that. Another problem I discovered was that at least one substantive translation was incorrect, at least in chapter 1. On page 11, the English question, "What is today's date?", is translated into Italian as, "Quanti ne abbiamo oggi?" I've checked with several translation sources, online and offline. The English translation of the Italian question is this: "How many do we have today?" Granted, this is only one translation; however, it is a substantive one, and it is at the beginning of the book - a book which reviewed by more than 140 instructors at universities and colleges across the United States. I agree with another reviewer who said this book is useless for self-instruction. The reason I'm citing examples of poor instruction from only Chapter 1 is that I've gone only as far as the end of Chapter 1 before getting so frustrated that I want to literally throw the book away. In sum, this book lacks depth in instruction; is poorly organized with mandating that students go to different media and sections of the book for most substantive information; and has errors in addition to the one cited above. Get a different book. Both ITALIAN DEMYSTIFIED and LIVING LANGUAGE: ITALIAN COMPLETE EDITION provide the depth that a beginning student of Italian truly needs. They're also much cheaper than this waste of trees.

Book w/o Code
I purchased a brand new book because I personally prefer a physical book in my hand while studying than an electronic book and I received it without the access codes attached. The whole purpose of buying the physical book was so I can read the pages and work on the connect website with the access code. If I knew it wasn't going to come with the access code I would have just went straight to Connect and bought the access code from them which is cheaper and it gives me access to an ebook even though I prefer a physical. You should state that you are selling the books without the codes so people can be aware. Also a textbook cannot be new if you already removed the access code from the book and its ridiculous to sell it for $105.74 without the access code.
