Interesting read. Tries to uproot models of thought while upholding some of their principal values.
Its a good read. "Speaks to the Power" of American and Western historiography. However, it places Afghanistan on a global network as long as it is the playing ground for another "major empire", be it through trading routes, soviet/us intervention, or a negative centrality produced by terrorism. By its focus on international powers and only Afghan elite, it robs autonomy from the people who are players in history. It raises questions as to how we think and write about ethnic groups and diaspora, because even though it advances a more open and humanising point of view about a global player that has been frequently alienated and invisibilized, it raises many other problematic. Its good for an audience from the US though, as it goes in from points that they might find interesting.I recommend it, but do not make it your bible.

To say that Robert Crews has a thorough grasp of the Afghan experience, through the course of time, would be a gross and negligent understatement. Afghan Modern is expertly written, accurately depicting the modern Afghan experience and how it came to be by wayof a diverse past.
