BARE NECESSITIES
BOBBY BARE-16 BIGGEST HITS: Laid back country warbler BOBBY BARE got his start via the pop novelty ALL AMERICAN BOY, a spoken word goof on ELVIS' Army induction, but attributed to his friend BILL PARSONS. The sentimental crossover singalongs 500 MILES AWAY FROM HOME and MEL TILLIS' DETROIT CITY spotlighted his plaintive vocals and spoken word bridges, underscoring themes of loneliness. MARGIE'S AT THE LINCOLN PARK INN and THAT'S HOW I GOT TO MEMPHIS, both from prolific writer TOM T. HALL, continued BARE's melancholy output in the sixties. A later liaison with children's author SHEL SILVERSTEIN yielded humor-laced material like Cajun tall tale MARIE LAVAUX, south of the border saga TEQUILA SHEILA, and macho putdown NUMBERS. BOBBY BARE's warm, conversational delivery and smart song choices made this pioneer of the "Outlaw" movement one of Country's most reliable, if underrated performers.RATING: FOUR GRINS

Bobby Bare at His Best.
This collection of hits are a straight "Five Stars" all the way from the first to the last track. His "Detroit City" is a classic, as is "Miller's Cave." There's one track where his joined by his son, who is obviously very young, and it's pure "kitsch" and just totally lovable. His song about "Marie Lavaux" is great, and his "Tequila Sheila" is about a truly faithless woman who he gets even with rather nicely. Of course he has his "The Winner" and "Dropkick Me, Jesus". By the way, if you really listen to it, it's not at all sacrilegious but rather a rather sincere prayer. All in all, this CD is, as I said at the start, "Five Stars" all the way.

NOT ALL STUDIO RECORDINGS
Bobby Bare always sang a blend of country folfk and pop with a nice baritone voice. On this set his biggest hits of -500 miles away from home and Detroit City are included but the latter part of the cd has live recordings instead of the studio versions. This is not neccessarily bad but it is not indicated on the cd index. Only on listening to the cd do you find this out. A nice surprise however, is the inclusion of the original version of - All American Boy - that was a big hit in 1958.John Walsh

True country
This album contains all original tracks, and is an absolute pleasure to listen to.Bobby's unique voice and style are unmatched in country music. If this were a vinyl record album, I would have worn it out by now. I have enjoyed every track from his early hits recorded in the early 60s, to the tongue in cheek novelty songs and bar songs. Bobby Bare must have had some fun in his career. If you want to own an album to relive some memories as well as to have a few chuckles, this is definitely the music for you.I highly recommend.

The CD is great, but my one disappointment is that the song ...
I bought this basically for one song, "The Winner". The CD is great, but my one disappointment is that the song I bought it for is a short version of the original hit and does not include all of the verses that I remember. Although that is something of a disappointment, it is still a wonderful album.
