City of Thieves (Battle Dragons #1)

Action-driven World-making at its Best
"When are they making 'Battle Dragons' a movie?" my 8-year-old asked me because the cinematic world-making in this adventure featuring a wild city full of warring dragons and rival gangsters is big screen ready. London's story has driven him through like few other books and while it's written for older kids, my son loves it. Just seeing a wyvern fight a sunrise reaper over city skyscrapers would be worth the price of admission.I'll also add that it's refreshing that the book doesn't hold to the old conventions of relationships and gender identity. Abel's gender fluid best friend Roa is one of the coolest characters in kids literature. All told, I can't wait for the next one, nor can my son.

Kids LOVED this book!
In thirteen years of teaching, I havenāt found another book to single-handedly hook ALL of my reluctant readers. Kids devoured this book and talked about it in the hall and at lunch. The high action plot filled with dragon battles and rival kins kept all of us on the edge of our seats, but I especially loved Abelās relationships with his friends and family. There was so much to discuss and unpack together, and I canāt thank Alex enough for bringing this story into the world! We canāt wait for book two!

My 10-year-old read this twice and wanted to read the rest of the series
I'll admit I got this for my kid. She read it twice when she was 10 and she's continuing on in the series as she's 11 approaching 12. I'm just happy to see something that isn't a screen capture her attention like that. The story is exciting, the writing is clear enough for a 4th grade reader to follow and the action flows at a good pace to keep a reader interested. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Fun Read for All
Although I am not a big fan of dragons, this book sucked me right in. The futuristic setting where dragons help to create an intriguing world in which Abel must decide how to forge his own path. This was a really fun read.

another winner by AlexLondon
So fun to have known Alex electronically through the years as a teacher and now a retired educator, and I find his connection with young people to improve and improve⦠his success has allowed him to seek to include all his readers and their backgrounds, and as someone who taught upper elementary and middle schoolers for just short of thirty years in rural Iowa, I know my students craved for representation beyond their backyard.
